2009: The Year of the Hurricane; a Retrospective

(banner credit: Bryant! Thanks!)

Year in Review

2009. Gone too soon? Perhaps. What isn't going away anytime soon is Switchfoot. One of the most eventful years in Switchfoot's recent history, 2009 saw the arrival of "Hello Hurricane," a triumphant declaration by a band in transition and a record that marked Switchfoot's spirited return to the music industry.

But it's also important to remember that 2009 saw the release of Jon Foreman's side project with Sean Watkins called Fiction Family. Their debut record, also titled "Fiction Family," wowed casual fans and diehards alike by showcasing Foreman's lyrical and musical versatility - it's not often you see a singer of a multi-platinum rock and roll band put down the electric guitar and pluck through some folksy, bluegrass-tinged soul tunes. And yet, here it was.

2009 also saw Switchfoot return to mainstream rock radio with "Mess of Me," which on the very last day of the year, entered the Top 20 of Billboard's Modern Rock/Alternative Songs chart. A harbinger of things to come? A forecast of an even brighter future for the band in 2010? Only time will tell, but before we move forward into 2010 (which I will call "The Year of the Foot," a borrowed reference), here is a retrospective look into what's happened in the past year. So that's just about everything! Thanks for reading... this year saw us complete 2 full years of We're Awakening. And i've enjoyed just about every step of the way. Hope you've all enjoyed reading along as much as I've enjoyed writing. Here's to 2010!

Be sure to check out LOBH's far superior recap of 2009. :)

"Mess of Me" hits RadioU's 2009 Most Wanted list!

(thanks x2wolf!)
Coming in at a solid No. 6, considering it's run began in the 11th month of the year, "Mess of Me" made a strong impression on the RadioU/TVU crowd. Thanks to your constant voting, we made this song big on the Christian radio scene. The next step is to impact this song to the mainstream in 2010!

And, as we said discussed on Monday, "Mess of Me" is doing well on Alternative/Modern Rock radio. It's sitting at No. 21 right now, but gained a few more spins yesterday. I'd like to think that had something to do with LOBH's shout-out yesterday; you all answered the call in a big way!

Let's keep this up!

"Mess of Me" on the brink of Top 20 at Modern Rock!

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!

-----

Hey friends. So far, a slow news Monday, but it must be noted that "Mess of Me" catapulted a modest two spots over the weekend to reach No. 21 on the Alternative charts! This is excellent news... it means we are on the brink of cracking the Top 20 on Modern Rock! WOO!

However, the spins are slowing down (as is expected over the holiday), but here is something we need to remember. Sometimes, a song will fall off so sharply over Thanksgiving or Christmas/New Year, that radio will decide not to pick it up once the holidays are over.

Thanks to YOUR efforts, "Mess of Me" survived the Thanksgiving hump and is where it's at today: about to crack the Top 20. But we need to keep going... "Mess of Me" survived Christmas while still gaining spins. Now we need to get over the New Year (this Friday), while maintaining progression on the charts.

2010 will bring "reinforcements," so to speak in the Craig Ferguson appearance on January 4th (mark your calendars) and the Rose Bowl pre-game performance on the 7th (we'll keep you posted on whether that is televised or not). Those should give Switchfoot the kind of publicity boost that will help radio along, but until then, it's all us holding the fort!

In other words, keep requesting "Mess of Me" at your local station. It's our efforts alone that are keeping this thing going, and it will be our efforts that will ensure this becomes Switchfoot's biggest rock song since "Stars." WE'VE GOT THIS!

"Mess of Me" added to MTV and VH1 websites

Happy Birthday Oh! Gravity.! Turns 3 years old today. WOW!

-----

Hey friends. Hope you had a Christmas day yesterday! Here are just some brief little news pieces that might catch you attention or not. Things are slow as the year ends, but 2010 promises to be a great one. I'm calling it "The Year of the 'Foot." Lots of exciting announcements are coming up, so please stick around!

Also, be sure to watch out for our in-depth 2009 retrospective. It was a huge year for the band, and on December 31st, we'll recap every major event!

-----

Well, MTV and Vh1 have finally added the "Mess of Me" music video to their respective websites. What this means towards future airplay on those channels is up in the air; the last few music videos (Awakening, This Is Home) haven't gotten anything there, so we're not holding our breath here, but still cool to note:

MTV

VH1

Also, if you haven't known already, "Mess of Me" is streaming at AOL and Yahoo Music

Oh, and I just learned the other day that Billboard counts AOL and Yahoo video streams towards Hot 100 consideration. Basically, the more times you stream a video, the more it counts towards chart placement. Hmm..... we can totally do that, can't we? ;)

-----

A blogger calls "Needle and Haystack Life" his top song of 2009. I think he hits the description spot-on.

1. “Needle and Haystack Life” – Switchfoot
Atmospheric in the vein of U2-meets-”Dare You to Move,” Switchfoot kick off their latest album, Hello Hurricane, with the impressive “Needle and Haystack Life.”  The song captures the essence of what Switchfoot is all about: soaring melodies and existential musings tinged with hope.  “Needle and Haystack Life” begins where Switchfoot left off with their previous albums, setting the tone for both their new album and their career going forward.

BREAKING: Switchfoot editing a music video for "Always"? (Japan Single?)

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!

-----

UPDATE (1:18 PM PST): Just talked to management, and they say that the "Always" music video will be released to Youtube after the single releases in Japan in February 2010. Stay tuned!

Today's early morning tweet from Switchfoot had this little tidbit of information in it. Check it out:

- Heading up to LA for morning tv with tim, chad, and drew- editing "always" video for Japan at the same time- multitasking!

^That's pretty sweet! We'll have more details for you as they come along!

-----

Speaking of that KTLA morning tv stint, here are the videos:

"Meant to Live"

"Always"

^I like the "Mess of Me" video playing in the background as they played this. I don't know why, but I think the effect is pretty cool.

Switchfoot news anchors San Diego's Fox 5 Morning Show

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!

-----

Hey friends. Job, here. As 2009 closes, we end a tremendous year for Switchfoot. Things have gone great so far, and progress has been made in various arenas, promotion-wise.

In the meantime, we are starting to look for dedicated fams to become part of a promotional effort to push "Mess of Me" at their local radio markets in the coming year. If you follow us on twitter, you will have already seen that we are gathering names of those interested in becoming part of support teams.

The objective is to have one or two (or more) dedicated workers calling in at least once a day to their local rock radio stations, and requesting "Mess of Me." They will also be in charge of texting in or filling out request forms online. This is all still in development, but starting to gather an interest list, so if you are down, comment below and let us know!

We'll have details ironed out early next year. Promise! Btw, shout out to our Chicago team, that has already been gathered (you guys rock!). Also, to my good friend Josh, who's tirelessly working the New York market. What a guy!

-----

Now, check out a quick interview and a performance of "Always" by Switchfoot on Fox5 in San Diego here:

Then, watch the latest DrewCast. Again, it is quite hilarious:

Switchfoot played their last show of the decade (WOW) this past weekend, a radio show in Riverside this past weekend. It was the XMAS 103.9 (KCXX) party. On a side note, KCXX spins "Mess of Me" quite often. Help support the single by requesting the song there: 909-890-1010

Anyways, back to the show. Our good friend and regular reader Doug sent us in a quick recap of the evening. Check it out!

Swithfoot was the first of 4 bands to come out and they rocked it out!

Set List

The Sound
Stars
Gravity
Feliz Navidad

Mess Of Me

Im still in shock from hooking up with Drew after the Concert. Take a look out for his new Drewcast soon :) Jon also mentioned to the crowd that this was his first time playing in the town he was born in. everyone cheered This was a short set but it was the best set list for a short and the crowd was really into it...

^That's awesome man! Glad you had fun!

Here are some videos from that show.

"Dare You to Move"

"Mess of Me"

Some more:
Stars
Feliz Navidad
Meant to Live

^They sure did rock it to end the year and the decade.

Here's to another great next 10 years, and a HUGE year for Switchfoot and "Hello Hurricane" in 2010!

-----

Speaking of decades and such, our friend Jessica sent in an email about how "Meant to Live" is up for "The Best Countdown of the Decade" on The Edge 102.1, a Toronto-based, Canadian radio station. We can go here to vote for it! It's got some tough competition (lots of Linkin Park), but we can definitely do it, right guys??

-----

Also, Switchfoot tweeted that they'd be doing a couple TV spots this coming week!

- Doing a few morning tv things this week: fox 5 in SanDiego on Tuesday, and KTLA in LA on Wed. Check em!

^Interesting. Will have to stay tuned for those!

BREAKING: SWITCHFOOT KICKS OFF 2010 WITH PERFORMANCES ON "THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH CRAIG FERGUSON" AND AT ESPN'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TAILGATE

PRESS RELEASE courtesy of Big Hassle Media

BAND EXTENDS NORTH AMERICAN TOUR AND CONTINUES FOOD DRIVE BENEFITING LOCAL FOOD BANKS

SONGS FROM SWITCHFOOT'S NEW ALBUM, HELLO HURRICANE, LICENSED BY VERIZON, "ONE TREE HILL," "VAMPIRE DIARIES" THE FILM "TO SAVE A LIFE," OPENING JANUARY 22nd

NEWS SOURCE: Big Hassle Media
December 16, 2009

SWITCHFOOT will kick off 2010 with a performance on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" on Monday, January 4th. Later that week, the band will be one of two groups playing the ESPN National Championship Tailgate, which will take place at the Rose Bowl Stadium just before the Alabama Crimson Tide face the Texas Longhorns in the Citi BCS National Championship Game on January 7th.

The band has been playing sold-out shows since November, coinciding with the release of its latest album, Hello Hurricane, which debuted in the Top 15 of The Billboard 200. The North American tour, which has been extended through January, features SWITCHFOOT playing Hello Hurricane in its entirety, followed by an assortment of fan favorites from its previous albums. SWITCHFOOT will continue to collect donations for local food banks along the way, so fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable items to the shows. (See below for the itinerary and a list of food banks that will receive donations.)

"Mess Of Me," the lead single from Hello Hurricane, is used in the trailer and television commercials for Samuel Goldwyn's Films' "To Save A Life," which will be released on January 22nd. You can check out the trailer at: http://tosavealifemovie.com/index.php

The track has also been tapped for use by NHL Music Nights on Fox Sports Net and by ESPN for college football bumpers. Numerous other tracks from Hello Hurricane have been licensed - "The Sound (John M. Perkins' Blues)" was used in the recent Verizon Wireless ad campaign for the BlackBerry® Storm™ 2 while "Bullet Soul" was selected for WWE's "TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs" pay-per-view. "Yet" was heard in The CW's new hit show, "The Vampire Diaries," while the network's "One Tree Hill" used six minutes of the epic "Your Love Is A Song" to close a recent episode.

Recorded with producer/bassist Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Rilo Kiley, Eminem, and Pink), Hello Hurricane is SWITCHFOOT's seventh full-length and its first on Atlantic Records. The band was featured in a Rolling Stone "In The Studio" piece and on the cover of Relevant Magazine while the new album was a critic's pick in USA Today's Fall Music feature. "On 'Needle and Haystack Life,' singer Jon Foreman works his breathy croon over surging pop-punk guitars; 'This Is the Sound' has a brutish, heavy-metal vibe; 'Enough' rides a percolating art-folk groove; and 'Bullet Soul' could be something by Swedish garage rock band the Hives," said Billboard while Alternative Press hailed the title track as "an uplifting, hope-giving affirmation of resurgence."

Band members Jon Foreman (vocals/guitar), Tim Foreman (bass), Chad Butler (drums), Jerome Fontamillas (keys/guitar) and Drew Shirley (guitar) are continually seeking new ways to convey that message of hope. In that spirit, that they are launching a new website, http://www.theworldyouwant.com, which will spotlight goodness, beauty, and truth in everyday life. Fans are invited to contribute stories about people they know who are making this world a better place. With the holidays quickly approaching, Jon Foreman addressed the timely topic of "Compassion vs. Consumption" in the second of two articles he penned for The Huffington Post:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jon-foreman/compassion-vs-consumption_b_369800.html

Switchfoot on Billboard Decades Best Lists

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!

-----

2009 marks the end of a decade that began in 2000. This decade saw a ton of good music, and a ton of bad as well. Switchfoot managed to sneak its way into this decade, making a pretty loud splash from 2003-2005. That time frame saw them unleash a double platinum record upon the world, followed by a label-tainted gold follow-up. As we close this amazing decade, the noted charts tracking Billboard recognized this formerly small band from San Diego.

"The Beautiful Letdown" finished at No. 195 on the Decade Billboard 200. What an accomplishment!

"Letdown" also charted on the Christians charts (not surprisingly) at No. 2, while "Nothing Is Sound" charted at No. 47.

^Congrats to Switchfoot! Here's to another great decade of music; and maybe, possibly, a BETTER one! Hello 2010. Hello Hurricane.

-----

Man, that sounded like a year-end post. We're not quite there yet folks. :P

Anyways, check out this review from the Boston Survival Guide.

This is not the sort of band I would normally trumpet praises for. It’s less the “Christian rock” bit that puts me off, but rather phrases like “mainstream major label success” and “certified double platinum – 2.6 million copies sold”. There are plenty of mainstream artists I enjoy listening to – U2.. Bob Dylan.. Bruce Springsteen.. Lifehouse, even. With those artists, though, I don’t feel the need to add my voice to the chorus, as it were. But after seeing Switchfoot’s breathtaking performance at the Paradise, I’m impressed with these guys on so many levels, I can’t help myself.

They could clearly fill larger venues, but they chose to play the 650-capacity Paradise, and in speaking to a few long-time fans after the show, it seems they often play more intimate clubs like this. The connection they have to their music, and to their audience, is deeply moving. As emotionally swept up I get during live concerts, it’s not often I’ll get teary, but they definitely had that effect. Another admirable trait: they’ve been major label artists, but they have an indie sensibility. Three years ago, they realized that being on Columbia Records might stifle their creativity and cause them to lose connection with their fans, so they formed lowercase people records, and got a distribution deal with Atlantic.

Musically, they can be a raging sea or a calm, clear lake. Jon Forman’s lyrics are raw, honest, and life-affirming. They have a strong following in the Christian community, but they’re not “preachy”. It’s more like “we’re imperfect humans, life can be fucked up, but even if things are a mess, there’s hope”. Apart from the lone woman yelling out “JESUS!” in the middle of one of their older songs about redemption (a subject matter dealt with by many non-Christian songwriters), I wouldn’t necessarily label them as a “Christian rock band”, as their themes of desperation, soul-searching, and finding faith in one’s life are universal.

I don’t know if they usually do all ages shows, but this sold out crowd ranged from teens and early 20s and even younger kids with parents, to middle aged types and older couples. Quite a diverse mix. I was pondering this and admiring the stage set, which included a backdrop of their new Hello Hurricane album and a few of those seagulls eerily in flight above the stage, as the lights went down and the band took the stage. Some guy was shining a spotlight in my direction and I briefly wondered if I might be stopped from taking photos. I noticed others looking at me, or rather just past me, and I turned to see lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Jon Foreman perched up there on the lower balcony with us as he started singing the first song on Hello Hurricane, the ethereal and hopeful “Needle and Haystack Life”. The way he sang this – a lone, emotionally vulnerable presence – gave me chills and jolted me immediately into that moment one usually strives throughout a live performance to achieve.

^It's a really really well-written review. Worth reading and keeping, so check out the rest here.

CHARTS

"Mess of Me" continues to perform well on the charts, holding at No. 24 on the Alternative radio format. Other songs are starting to drop off as we come to the end of the year, but "Mess of Me" is still rising slowly but steadily. We still need to keep supporting it day by day, so check out our Support Section (which we update, or at least post, daily) to help out.
