Press Plus 1 did a hilarious interview with Drew Shirley. Here's an excerpt:
In 1996 a couple of guys got together to form the band Chin Up which would eventually become the alternative rock band that we now know as Switchfoot. In 2002 Drew Shirley was asked to join the band to bring something more to their live performance.
Fast forward to seven years later and you find me chatting on the phone with Drew the day before he headed out with the band on their Hello Hurricane tour. If you know Switchfoot you would probably be familiar with the front man Jon Foreman. You may not be as familiar with Drew, guitarist and self proclaimed joker of the band, but let me introduce you to a laid back, hilarious, passionate musician and humanitarian who loves Canadians. I believe him when he says it; he's married to a girl from Victoria, BC.
Influenced by Led Zeppelin, Drew brings the different tones and textures to the music that you hear on the albums post-The Beautiful Let Down. "I love guitar tones, I love getting the cool sounds and I love making crazy noises... the crazy sound that you think may be a keyboard or something, that is stuff I just experiment with on the guitar," he says. His love of experimenting also translates into his choice of favourite songs to play. Off their current album his picks were the single "Mess of Me" which is full of what Drew calls "kickage" and "Sing it Out" which is slower and lets him use more effects.
"Mess of Me" is No. 19 on the Alternative Charts! Make sure to request the song at your local rock station.
TIP: BE SURE not to request too much. That is a one-way ticket to angering radio station programmers and hurt the band. I learned this from personal experience... so take it from a pro at over-requesting. :P
As such, I'll be posting the request links still every day, just to have them available. But please request with discretion. Thanks everyone! Also, all the station links posted below are guaranteed to have played the song at least once.
Please also go here to see a list of stations already playing "Mess of Me" and phone numbers to call in and request the song with!
HERE are some request links you can do online if you can't reach a phone. Please be SURE to fill out a few of these links every day, especially the ones at or near your area! It is our collective efforts that will ensure the success of this and any future Switchfoot single.
