^Footsoldiers, job well done! We have beat Ke$ha, and "Mess of Me" is now the most-listened to song on lala.com. Now we just have to wait and see if that translates over to song sales on lala. Only time will tell, but we've done our part! No. 1 song; that's something to be proud of!

The Houston Chronicle did a quick interview with Jerome Fontamillas. Check it out, reproduced here:

The first time I saw Switchfoot headline was in a dirty little club packed with 600 or so others. Since then, the band has performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, and toured New Zealand and Japan.

Switchfoot's seventh album, Hello Hurricane, came out last fall and surpassed my expectations. I recently talked to the band's keyboard player, Jerome Fontamillas, about touring, Valentine's Day and a little history lesson.

Q: Most people discovered Switchfoot with The Beautiful Letdown in 2003, shortly after you joined the band. What bands were you in before that?

A: I was in two bands. Mortal, an industrial band, and then Fold Zandura. We would play with Switchfoot all the time in Southern California, so that's how I got to know them.

Q: So did they call you to join the band?

A: My old band had disbanded, and Jon Foreman called me one night and asked me if I would be interested in being the keyboard player. I said no because I had just been hired for an office job faxing and filing in downtown L.A., and I started the next day. They were a young band then and weren't able to pay me a lot, so he understood that I really needed the steady job. On the second day of my job I called him back on my lunch break and said, “I hate my job. Do you still need that keyboard player?”

Q: You were born in Manila, the Philippines. When did you move to the United States?

A: I came here when I was 3. I only went back about two years ago when Switchfoot toured there. I sent out an announcement that if there was anyone out there with the last name Fontamillas they should come out to the show, but it went out too late and I got all these e-mails after we left. It would have been cool to see some of those relatives, but it just didn't work out.

Q: You just wrapped up a tour playing all of Hello Hurricane, in CD order. Were you happy with the results?

A: The idea behind recording was to be able to play them all in a live setting. We ordered the track listing the way we thought someone would want to hear them live as well. Bands don't typically do that. The songs on Hello Hurricane are ones we really believe in, and we really wanted to be able to deliver it live. It was a challenge, but it turned out to be one of the best tours we have ever done.

Q: You are playing Houston's Arena Theater next week. It's a classic venue with a rotating stage. Have you ever played on one of those?

A: Actually, yes, we have. The San Antonio rodeo, I believe. You have to pace yourself because you get a little dizzy.

Q: Valentine's Day is this weekend. How did you and your wife meet?

A: We met at a barbecue with mutual friends. We've been married four-and-a-half years now.

Q: How did you propose?

A: I planned it way in advance, and I had some help from a few friends in high places. I brought her up to this camp, and we had brownies in a fort. Her birthday is July 26, so I proposed on that day at 7:26 p.m. It was nerve wracking because I had to look at my watch constantly.

Q: Didn't she start to wonder why you looked at your watch so much?

A: Yeah, she thought I must have been bored with her or maybe I had someplace I had to be, but it worked.

^I find that proposal story humorous.

In other news, OneRepublic drops out of an OPENING slot for Switchfoot. According to this source, Switchfoot is playing their entire Strawberry Festival set on their own after OneRepublic pulled out due to "scheduling conflicts." It is interesting to note that this article points out that the giant pop band was supposed to be the "opening act for Switchfoot's March 6 concert."

Huh. Considering OneRepublic had a MONSTROUS record cycle for their debut, including "Apologize" and "Stop and Stare," you would think Switchfoot would be opening. Well, either way, people going to see Switchfoot will get more of them, which is never a bad thing.
