Hey folks. Just thought I'd stop by and give you all an update on how the "Vice Verses" campaign is going.

We're off to a wondrous start. The record debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, the first time a Switchfoot record has done that since "Nothing Is Sound" did it in 2005, debuting at No. 3. "Vice Verses" sold 50,000+ units the first week, the most since "Oh! Gravity." shifted 60,000+ in its first week. This is big, folks! Coming off a Grammy win with "Hello Hurricane," the Switchfoot guys are flying high and doing really, really well.

"Dark Horses" is also on pace for great things as well. It's currently No. 14 on Mediabase Alternative, and gaining momentum each day. Expect it to crack the Top 10 in a couple weeks time, with a very distinct possibility of knocking on the door of the Top 5 come mid-November. Be sure to keep requesting it at your local hard rock and alternative stations!

Switchfoot will be playing on Conan on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. Be sure to tune in! This is an exciting time for the band!

"Dark Horses" Billboard Chart News (Week of August 27, 2011)

"Dark Horses" is beginning to make significant inroads on the Billboard Charts.

- This week, it jumps up three spots to reach No. 28 on Alternative Songs/Modern Rock.

- It also hits the Rock Songs chart at No. 50 this week.

- But most significantly, it's No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 Bubbling Under songs. What this means is, it is just outside of the Billboard Hot 100 charts, the holy grail of singles charts, which combines radio airplay across the entire nation, sales data from iTunes/Amazon/etc., and streaming activity from online music sources.

If we can push "Dark Horses" into the Hot 100, it will be the first time that a Switchfoot song made that chart since "Stars" back in 2005. This is HUGE, folks.

SWITCHFOOT will perform on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Monday, September 19th. The GRAMMY®-winning band will give “Dark Horses,” the lead single from its upcoming album, Vice Verses, its television debut. The track is climbing at Modern Rock radio, where it’s already been added by KTBZ (Houston), San Diego’s 91X and KBZT, CIMX (Detroit),KPNT (St. Louis), WXDX (Pittsburgh), KXRK (Salt Lake City) and numerous other stations.

Atlantic Records will release Vice Verses, the eighth studio record from the multi-platinum rock band, on September 27th. Working with producer Neal Avron (Sara Bareilles, Weezer), SWITCHFOOT recorded most of the album in their San Diego, CA home studio. Mike Elizondo (Eminem, Dr. Dre, Pink) who produced 2009′s Hello Hurricane, served as executive producer. Songs like “Afterlife” and “The War Inside” take the harder-edged approach of Hello Hurricane a step further, creating what Billboard has called “powerful, anthemic rockers.” Tracks such as the groove-oriented “The Original” and “Blinding Light” benefit from a hip-hop backbeat as does “Selling the News,” a Beck-like song that finds Foreman performing spoken word. “The War Inside” really puts the rhythm section up front while the snappy “Rise Above It” recalls the Chili Peppers punk-funk.

With its play on words, the new album’s title suggests its theme: everything has two sides. “Every blessing comes with a set of curses,” singer-guitarist Jon Foreman sings on the title track, all the while wondering if “there’s a meaning to it all.”
“The whole thing is about polarity,” says Foreman. “We wanted to write about the polarity of what it means to be human, the lights and darks. I’m always intrigued by the tension that exists between life and death. When making Hello Hurricane, there was a graveyard right by the hotel we were staying at while we were mixing it, and I spent a little bit of time there each morning walking through and sorting it out…really Vice Verses started there. This record is as much about loss as it is about what we still have while we’re living.”

"Dark Horses" is now No. 49 on Mediabase's Alternative radio charts. In just a little over a week of availability at radio, the lead single from "Vice Verses" is on it's way up, having been on the "Taking Off" list for almost an entire week now.

Switchfoot announces some of the "Vice Verses" Super Deluxe Box Set

"Vice Verses" campaigning season is upon us, as the first single has been deployed to Christian Contemporary Hit Radio.

Air1, one of the top stations on the format, began playing "Restless" yesterday. As such, that is our first target. Consider this as a warm-up to "Dark Horses," the big mainstream alternative single that releases officially to radio on Wednesday (more on that in the coming days).

We're awakening the Footsoldiers!

In the four years since I started We're Awakening as a promotional site for Switchfoot's "Awakening" single, I've had the absolute pleasure of blogging about my favorite band and interacting with a ton of awesome people (i.e. you, my lovely readers). Even that word, "reader," seems a little too formal. I consider you all my friends, and as Jon Foreman said, "co-conspirators." What started as a hobby has opened up friendships and opportunities I could've never expected. And four years later, I still consider this a hobby in the best way possible.

The reason for this blog post is just to keep you all aware of the changes that have been going on internally with We're Awakening. As you know, we have been working in close tandem with our partner site Land of Broken Hearts, which was started and run by the ever lovely Jeanna. In the same time period, Red Light Management entrusted us with the running of Footsoldiers, the official street team of Switchfoot.

The Footsoldiers are not a single person or a single identity. The Footsoldiers are all of us. Since day 1 that I've been able to take charge of this entity, we've stressed the importance of involving everyone. No sign-ups, no fees, nothing. We wanted to make Footsoldiers a common banner for anyone and everyone who loves Switchfoot to be empowered to help spreading the word and the love of their music. That was the original vision for Footsoldiers, and what began six years ago has continued strong.

So, at this point, I'm rambling. I sincerely apologize. If you want to get to the nitty gritty, scroll on down to the bottom of the post!

Anyways, as Footsoldiers began to take on a life of its own in many ways, I found that I was double-dutying my time in the Switchfoot world. We're Awakening was still posting daily updates, while Footsoldiers was hard at work getting "The Sound" to the Top 10 of Alternative. All of this while Job, the student, was getting swamped by college work. Clearly, it was time to reassess the time that was being put into this thing.

Therefore, in order to make an already long story a little shorter, I would like to announce today that We're Awakening is now officially the blog of Footsoldiers! Over the past few months, you no doubt would've noticed the less frequent amount of comprehensive updates. We've decided to truncate the news coming through We're Awakening to the bare minimum, and, once "Vice Verses" comes out, focus on promotional efforts and campaigning. We will continue to operate through Facebook and Twitter as well, so be sure to like/follow those accounts to stay up to date.

That way, we allow our partners, LOBH, to keep on doing what they're doing, providing the most comprehensive, detailed, and best Switchfoot experience on the web. Meanwhile, We're Awakening will live on with its original vision: promoting the band to the best of our abilities.

Again, thanks for coming along for the ride. Let's continue to make beautiful music available to the world, together as one.

"Dark Horses" digital single to release July 26th; more goodies to come!

Amazon.com has the digital single for "Dark Horses" listed. The release date says July 26, but we'll wait for confirmation on that one. Management has said that the single drops on the 20th, but again, we'll wait for confirmation.

As far as the more "goodies to come" part of our title, you'll just have to wait and see. Or, if you can't wait to hear some news, head over to our partner site LOBH to whet your appetite for all things "Vice Verses."

To record their eighth studio album, Vice Verses, Switchfoot spent time at their San Diego studio and at Paramount Recordingin Los Angeles. Neal Avron, who’s worked with acts such as Yellowcard and Anberlin, is producing the album. Avron’s résumé made him a logical choice to guide Switchfoot’s pop-rock—which is something that vocalist/guitarist Jon Foreman says his friends have been telling him for years.

“Sean O’Donnell from Reeve Oliver, who’s now in Yellowcard, [and] Jordan [Pundik] from New Found Glory [have talked up Avron],” he explains. “They’re both just like, ‘You gotta meet him, and you’re going to work with him.’ I’m really glad it worked out for both of our schedules to make a record together, it’s been so much fun. I feel like everyone’s pushed each other in a really good way.”

Indeed, Foreman says that Vice Verses will “surprise people in a lot of ways.” Switchfoot’s ever-prolific nature—they wrote 80 songs alone for 2009’s Hello Hurricane—means that “there’s all these songs and colors that we never actually show to people,” he says. “On this album, we’re actually showing a few of those colors that we’ve never actually shown off before.” For instance, Foreman notes that the verses of the song “Selling The News” are “almost spoken-word,” while “The War Inside” de-emphasizes electric guitar in favor of driving rhythms.

The latter song is a good representation of Vice Verses’ sound. “We set out with this record to make an album that was driven by the bass and drums, the rhythm section,” he says. “A couple of my friends who heard the record said it almost sounds like dub. We all grew up listening to hip-hop records, stuff that has a lot more of the motor coming from the rhythm section rather than the electric guitar. That’s something we wanted to try out [to] see how far we could take that.”

The name of the album comes from a Switchfoot song that should be familiar to fans—Foreman’s been performing it live for years--although the band found it challenging to fit the tune’s “acoustic, singer/songwriter” instrumentation into Vice Verses’ rhythm-heavy vibe. Still, they aren’t shying away from thought-provoking material, especially lyrically. Foreman says some songs address the idea of “selling the news”—e.g., how money or “ad-driven corporations” can influence the stories you hear about or read—while “The War Inside” is “examining the darker stuff within. I’ve tended to come to the conclusion that none of the external wars can be won without first confronting whatever demons you’re fighting inside.”

Vice Versesstarts with “Afterlife” and ends with “Where I Belong.” The two songs form lyrical symmetry that Foreman finds appealing. “For me, [‘Afterlife’ is] speaking about the idea that I want to live my life right now, I’m not waiting for the afterlife,” he says. “The flipside of that coin is the idea that this world isn’t really a place I feel all that comfortable with; there’s a lot of things I still don’t understand. I’m still trying to figure out where I belong in the world. To have ‘Afterlife’ start the record and ‘Where I Belong’ close the record, it feels like it brings it full circle.” alt

Currently producing their latest album, "Vice Versa" Fontamillas said that the new work will be more of a sequel to the last album "Hello Hurricane", than a whole new concept.

"We are more focused on the songs this time round," said the father of one.

"Instead of producing 30 – 40 songs like the last time, this time we are producing 20 – 30 songs."

He even lets on that the album slated to be out in June, will contain roughly 11- 12 tracks.

"Currently, we are recording our eleventh track," said Fontamillas.

My friend Jeanna and I got an amazing opportunity to exclusively interview Neal Avron, the current producer working with Switchfoot on "Vice Verses." He had a ton of insight for us, and if you want to listen to our rough audio recording of the interview, head over to LOBH.

Jeanna: what is the musical direction of this album?

Neal Avron: The musical direction of this album I think is several. I think the main thing is its gonna be much more of a rhythm section and bass record; not as densely packed on the guitar front, and it's much more assertive from the drums, bass, and percussion setting, and it really advanced where these guys have been before as far as all the grooves that are on the record. That's been one of the main driving forces. I think the other is also just the space, and not feeling like every moment has to be filled with something so there's these really great breaths in the music. And the other thing is there's this incredible variety of different sonic signatures that the guys were totally willing to go for. So each song really has its own voice on the record, not just from a lyrical standpoint.

Job: How far along is the recording process? Are the guys getting ready to do mixing?

NA: We are very far along, conceptually. Next week will be pretty much the last week of recording. There might be a few things to tidy up before that but we should be mixing shortly after that.

Jeanna: What has been the most difficult thing about the album process so far?

NA: Well it's been a very smooth record. I think the most difficult thing though would be choosing which songs work for this record. Jon is a super prolific songwriter, and I think he wrote 50-60 songs prior to the beginning of the idea of making this record, which were whittled down to 20 or so that got sent to me, which we whittled down to a core group for the record, which we then even whittled down further. And Jon even wrote a couple new songs; I believe there were three more written during the making of the record that were not only great songs, but important to the record, and they fit really well into the record. I think going in, it was very important for us to find a core group of songs that really represented a similar… I don't want to say feeling but… they all felt like they belonged. It doesn't matter that one was fast, one was slow, one was singing soft or singing loud or whatever, they still feel like they had the same matter that kind of joins them together. Choosing which songs were the right ones was the hardest job.

Jeanna: Along those lines, what are the guys trying to say with this album? What are the themes and what are they trying to convey?

NA: I think based on what we talked about early on, I think they want to come off in a positive light. I think there are some songs that can definitely be taken in any way, but I think ultimately they're looking for a positive message or finding a way to move forward on something. I think ultimately that's where it's at. There's not a lot of negativity just coming through in the lyrics; I think it's just finding a good place in your life or finding a way to get to that good place in your life.

Job: You're coming off two straight No. 1 Billboard albums with Sara Bareilles and Distrubed. Has that changed your philosophy in the studio any or has it just given you a confirmation as to your skills as a producer?

NA: First of all, I didn't produce the Disturbed record, I mixed that record. But I think that it's always great to get that kind of validation. And I think more importantly for me is to find a way to take whatever artist I'm working with, whether that's Linkin Park, Sara Bareilles, or Switchfoot, any of those bands, and get to the core of what they're trying to say both lyrically and sonically, and help them achieve and express that, whether that's producing or mixing or both. And that just comes from a lot of discussions about how we want to achieve what kind of sonics or what kind of density or production we want to achieve, and then we go after achieving it. Sometimes we nail it on the head right away, sometimes it's a matter of finding our way through the song and letting our guts decide where to go ultimately. But I think that having a No. 1 doesn't really change or validate what I'm doing. I think more than that is bands the I've been able to work on multiple record with. I mean Fall Out Boy I've done three records with, Linkin Park I've done a couple records with now; I continue to have bands that want to come back, and that's the biggest validation for me.

Jeanna: What's your favorite song on the album and why?

NA: Wow! That is really hard. It changes daily for me. Part of that is because the way we cut this record, we decided to group the songs into small bunches. Sometimes you'll do a record where you'll cut the drum tracks for all the songs, then you'll do the bass tracks, then you'll do the guitar tracks. So you're constantly having to rope in 12-14 songs of material and keep track of everything that's going on with each one.

What we've done with this record is we've said, "ok, let's pick three or four songs. Let's record those songs and get them sounding like we want them to sound. Then we're going to put them away, put them on the shelf, start with another three or four, so we can give the song a lot of attention, spend a lot of time with it, get it to a place where we feels it's good, and really just be able to take each song as far as it can go." Then we move on; and when we come back to it, we'll come back and see "oh yeah we put too much of this, we need a little more of that," and I think it's really helped us with the album.

As far as a favorite song, there's a song called "Afterlife" which I think is amazing. Just a beautiful song, it's got a really great mood to it, and I think it takes a nice step up for Switchfoot.

Job: Are there any specific instruments, certain guitars or pedals that the band has gone back to a lot on this record, or has it been more of a wide open experimental plane where you're just using all sorts of instruments?

NA: That's a good question. It's definitely been a wide open plane. This band has their own studio which really is a great luxury so they can really find time to explore a lot of different avenues, sonically. They have a ton of different amplifiers and guitars, they have a bunch of mics, and I brought some mics, and we've really been able to just try anything we want. We've been using multiple guitar amps at the same time, combining them sometimes, separating them into stereo, having a lot of small old amps. With guitars, a large portion of the sound that they drive is from a small combo of amps, and not large Marshall stacks or 4x12's, which has really given the record a big personality that isn't as much on other records, especially rock records. And I'd say drum-wise, again, we've really explored a lot of different avenues, not only in ways for Chad to play his parts and the grooves that he plays, but sonically.

So I can't say there's one core group of things that we've done. Every song since the beginning has had its own voice and a lot of that is based on taking chances sonically and giving it a completely different set signature.

Jeanna: What's it like working with Switchfoot, the pros and the cons?

NA: Well once again, I don't have a lot of bad to say - pretty much nothing. These guys are super sweet guys; they walk in every morning with a smile on their faces, high-fiving each other because they know they're making music and it's the greatest thing ever. They're doing exactly what they love to do, and really there's nothing bad that seems to come with them. I think the good things though is they are so willing to go for and try anything; they're open to any new idea despite the fact they've made a bunch of records and there's no one way for them to do things. And the other thing is they're great musicians, so when I ask for them to try a different part or a different sound, it's just a matter of minutes to kind of bring it up and try it. It's just great to have that kind of versatility and have the guys be such great musicians.

Job: But is there one member that is really stubborn about pursuing a song or an idea?

NA: Well, I mean Jon is the main songwriter. He's the driving force in that regard. Tim and he have this incredible simpatico as brothers. It's actually kind of amusing. There will be several times where Jon is done singing, and Tim will say something, and two seconds later Jon will say an exact thing. Or a guitar part is about to happen, and the two of them will literally spit out the same sentence when they're talking to each other. They kind of have this "brother" thing. And each person brings his own thing. Drew's got his own thing where he'll be in the back of the room playing his guitar as we're doing a vocal, and as soon as we're done doing the vocal, he'll come to me and say, "what do you think? Here's a guitar idea I had." And we'll listen to it and go, "that's great!" And he'll just jump in there and put some guitar down on it and everything kind of feeds off each other. That's kind of the way the whole thing has been.

And when it's time to do bass, Tim plugs in… when [people] start hearing the bass lines on this album, it will open people's eyes. And people who are bass players are going to be smiling from ear-to-ear because it's pretty amazing.

Job: What are you or the guys most excited about when the record comes out?

NA: I think for me, the thing I'm most excited about at this point is that this is a real, honest, true, front-to-back album. It's not a concept record, but it's a [record] chock full of great songs from top to bottom. It's not going to be one of those albums where you're going to find two songs that you like, and the rest you're not going to want to be part of. It's really going to be an album listener, and I think there's going to be days where you go, "wow, I really want to listen to these five songs." And another day where you go, "I want to listen to these other five songs; they make me feel a certain way." There's going to be days where you're going to need to listen to the whole thing top to bottom. I think there's going to be plenty of songs that will feel like singles, but ultimately, it's just a great core group of songs that I think fans and other people are going to want to listen to top to bottom.

Exclusive Info on the new album called "Vice Verses"

Just got off the phone with Bruce Flohr of Red Light Management. Here are some notes from our conversation... (don't worry, we have permission to share):

This will be Switchfoot's biggest, most exciting period yet.

It'll be a bigger sonic record than ever.

Here's whats going on in the studio:

- The band is currently in the studio recording "Vice Verses."
- They are working with Neal Avron and Mike Elizondo, who is serving in a more overall role because he currently holds an official job at Warner now. Avron is working with the band day by day.
- "Vice Verses" is going to be similar to U2's "Achtung Baby" in that it will represent a radical shift in sound from the previous record.
- This will sound like "Switchfoot on steroids," according to Bruce Flohr.
- There will be much more from the bass and drums, with guitars providing "bite." Jon's vocals will have even more urgency than before.
- "Dark Horses" was thought to be the first single; now it might not even make the record. In fact, a lot of songs might not be making it.
- There will be a little bit of funk in the record.
- Currently, 9 songs are done; The band will record until February in San Diego, then they'll head up to Los Angeles, mix the record, and maybe write one or two more songs.
- No double record this time; they are crafting each song individually and working on the sound of the record; drums change on each song, guitar tones change on each song. Because they are so focused on the details, there is no way they can put together a double record by summer time.
- Flohr said this record will cause listeners to say, "DAMN that's Switchfoot?"
- "Hello Hurricane: hinted at Switchfoot's new sound; THIS will be the new sound.
- Release time is tentatively some time in June.
- There will be a music video for the lead single; some documentation on the studio will come out as well.

SWITCHFOOT RECEIVES FIRST GRAMMY® AWARD! Band Is In The Studio Working On Follow-Up to GRAMMY-Winning Album Hello Hurricane Plans For June 18, 2011 Bro-Am Charity Event And International Tour Announced

Multi-Platinum rock band Switchfoot received its first GRAMMY award last night, with Hello Tomorrow, its seventh studio album, winning in the Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album. Released November 10, 2009 on Atlantic and Credential Records, Hello Hurricane entered The Billboard 200 at No. 13. The band launched the record with an extensive tour and performances on all the major late night network talk shows. “The Sound (John M. Perkins’ Blues),” one of the album’s singles, was a Top 10 hit at Modern Rock radio.

Paste Magazine declared: “Hello Hurricane will rock you like a…well, you know…” while Alternative Press called the record “a hope-giving affirmation of resurgence from a band who might have been down but were never out.” Rolling Stone noted, “The group added some heft to its super catchy alternative rock” and Relevant Magazine deemed it “one of the best albums of Switchfoot’s career.”

Switchfoot is currently in the studio working on the follow-up to Hello Hurricane, which will be released later this year. The group is renowned for its live concerts, performing at sold-out arenas worldwide. They’ll offer fans a preview of material from their upcoming album on an international tour of Australia, Malaysia and the Philippines this April and May, as well as on a 10-city major market Canadian tour. Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman will also open up the San Diego State Aztecs vs. BYU Cougars basketball game with the national anthem on Feb. 26. Switchfoot news has been slow lately, but we have gotten a couple of update tweets from the guys in the last few days.

On Sunday night, January 31, Switchfoot tweeted the following:

- Tim is laying down sweet bass. The song is called "selling the news"

If you recall, that song was one of the candidates for "Hello Hurricane." It'll be interesting to hear how that one turns out.

Switchfoot took their sunny rock and roll to the snowy slopes of Denver to play at the Big Air ski event. Here's a disparagingly biased blog about the band's performance.

Last night, under the orange sky that blanketed the city, Switchfoot squeezed a quick set in at the Big Air event in Civic Center Park. No opener. No warm-up. Just four guys coming out from San Diego to entertain a frozen mass of skiers, snowboarders and industry big-wigs in town for the week's snow festivities. Nothing says gnarly like some good ol' contemporary butt-rock.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - In Encinitas, San Dieguito Academy's associated student body put on a special fundraiser in honor of a little boy who lost his life to cancer.

Saturday's benefit concert featured several local bands, including a performance by Switchfoot lead singer Jon Foreman, A San Dieguito Academy grad.

Proceeds will benefit Connor's Cause for Children, a local organization that raises money for families with children with life-threatening diseases or injuries.

It is named after four-year old Connor Champ, who died of brain cancer in 1994.

Fiction Family bassist Tyler Chester tweeted the following:

Benmont Tench is the keyboardist and one of the founding members of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Switchfoot fans are familiar with Petty's work due to the band's performances of "Won't Back Down," a Heartbreakers classic.

Tench has also worked closely with original Fiction Family member Sean Watkins, playing as a sessions musician on Watkins' solo projects as well as the recent Works Progress Administration "supergroup" side project.

You all have seen the clip of "We Are One Tonight" that was featured in the BCS National Championship Game. Well, some good news is on the way. We have received word that the full clip should be available some time next week! Be on the look out for that.

Also, it's good to note that "We Are One Tonight" continued to do well on the iTunes front, peaking at No. 71 on iTunes Pop and even reaching the Top Songs Overall chart, coming in at No. 200.

On another note, we've also gotten confirmation that there are currently no plans on releasing a live album of any sort. Switchfoot has dived fully into the recording sessions for "Vice Verses" and are pursuing that summer release they've talked about.

Also, a year after the Haiti disaster, Jon Foreman is still doing his part to raise awareness and help for the earthquake-stricken country. He has donated "Red Eyes" to the re-launched "Download To Donate for Haiti" initiative.

Basically, a growing database of free music from fairly big-name artists will be made available to those who donate to the organization. For more details, head over to their website or check out the new splash on switchfoot.com

Switchfoot took over sports television in a big way last night during the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game. ESPN has been pushing Switchfoot hard in all of the NCAA Football bowl games thus far this season, but that's not all.

The National Hockey League's All-Star game has a commercial that's currently running "Meant to Live" in the background. Check it out:

Online streamers of ESPN 3 were also treated to a college hoops commercial that featured "This Is Home":

And of course, the BCS Championship game itself saw the debut of Switchfoot's brand new music video for "We Are One Tonight." Contrary to what Hurley told us, we did NOT see a full music video. Here's what was aired during the halftime show before kicking the second half of the game:

The exposure has revived sales for "We Are One Tonight" on iTunes, netting the song a No. 75 spot on the iTunes Pop charts.

Next item on our menu today is a report from one of our readers about a possible live recording done back in March 2010.

In response to our FootColumn that was posted the other day, where we discussed a live "Hello Hurricane" album, our friend Sarah had this to say:

Hey! I went to a Hello Hurricane show in March, and while we were waiting around, all of the security guards were telling us that we were not allowed to take pictures or record anything, because the guys were recording that show for an album. I questioned the validity of that statement as soon as it was said, but as you all know almost every show has several videos posted on Youtube, and ours has 2 that are each about 30 seconds long. So, obviously, people took their request seriously. But like I said, I don't have a clue if this is in the works or not. Fingers crossed!

^This was the Royal Oak show on March 25, 2010. As far as we know, it's not at every show that fans are told to put away their cameras. We are in the process of asking for any official confirmation, though it's not likely we'll hear anything if nothing has been announced by the band. Just thought it'd be worth noting.

A brief clip of the "We Are One Tonight" music video was aired pre-game, while "The Sound" played in the background of highlight and analysis reels. We'll keep you updated.

5:46 PM PST: "Free" plays during another montage.

6:25 PM PST: "We Are One Tonight" plays as a quick outro to commercial break.

6:44 PM PST: "We Are One Tonight" has already seen a sales spike on iTunes. It is currently the highest selling Switchfoot song, and is No. 141 on iTunes Pop.

6:53 PM PST: Now No. 141. Also, "The Sound" shows up again on the broadcast during a montage.

7:15 PM PST: "We Are One Tonight" is now No. 138 on iTunes pop. The game has entered halftime. You might want to tune in very soon.

7:36 PM PST: A short clip of the "We Are One Tonight" music video aired again. However, halftime is over and it appears we will not be seeing the full music video. Disappointing.

We are starting to record with producers Neil Avron, Mike Elizondo and engineer Adam Hawkins. Look out for a new Switchfoot album in the summer of 2011! Neal Avron has worked with the likes of HUGE mainstream pop acts like New Found Glory, Fall Out Boy, Sara Bareilles, Linkin Park, and more recently, Anberlin. He normally provides a slick sheen over top of mixes to give them a more appealing value, something which could go a long way in bringing Switchfoot's sound closer to the more mainstream. I'm 50/50 on this one.

Elizondo is the guy credited with being the "closer" for "Hello Hurricane," helping the band sort through the songs that eventually resulted in the track listing of the last record. He's a strong producer with a solid rock sensibility, though I feel like the songs off of "Hello Hurricane" lacked some teeth.

And, Hawkins returns as the sound engineer and mixer from the "Hurricane" sessions. His work speaks for itself as well.

FootColumn: Why a live "Hurricane" project needs to happen

Hello friends! Welcome to the first FootColumn of 2011. It's been awhile since my last one, and I kind of miss doing this. Here's to making FootColumns more common in 2011? Yay or nay?

Anyhow, I'd like to take this time now to talk about something that's been on my mind in regards to Switchfoot. That is, the concept of the live album.

This is something that has been missing from the Switchfoot official canon. We've had a few live DVD's, but never a proper live CD. "Live In San Diego," "Live at the Ventura Theatre," and "The Best Yet: Live" are all wonderful commemorations of the Switchfoot live show in DVD form. iTunes also distributes an EP called "Switchfoot: Live," which features cuts from the "Live In San Diego" DVD, but that hardly qualifies. Aside from a few technical problems that have plagued every one of these releases, from poor mixing to editing glitches, there's nothing to gripe about with these concert films.

But where are the live albums? Now, Switchfoot fans are no strangers to recordings of the band's live performances. For the entire "Oh! Gravity." tour, the band released bootleg recordings from each night's shows. The first few songs of each show were recorded directly from the soundboard and committed to CD's, which were then sold after the performances. The band ok'd the online distribution of these tracks as well, and the bootlegs circulated across the Switchfoot fanscape. This practice continued for the Appetite for Construction Tour, where the band shifted to hosting the bootlegs online to allow for more variety in the song selections.

After this tour, they came together with Philemon Thomas to sort through and compile the cream of the crop for a live album compilation called "Best of Bootlegs Vol. 1." This can be considered the band's first proper live album, but it saw limited release as a Friends of the Foot fan club exclusive. That was in 2008.

Now, we've arrived at the beginning of a new year. Late 2009 through to late 2010 saw the band play some of their most inspired, powerful shows to date behind the cathartic "Hello Hurricane." (Anaheim show review) These shows were worth recording, especially those from the 2009 Fall leg of the tour. Here, we saw the band play their entire new record front-to-back. These shows need to be remembered. After all, the band was coming off the most creative period of their career and were clearly at the top of their game on the live stage.

So, we got news that the Atlanta show had been recorded with the intentions of a possible live album release. Later, we heard that the record was in the mixing stages, while a friend of mine claimed to have met Switchfoot's live recording producer, who was working on a DVD. But after that, we've gotten nothing. And, it's 2011 now.

If the band took the trouble to mix the recordings from this show, perhaps there is still a chance that we hear a proper recording from this tour. I feel like this is something that really needs to happen. Their track record would suggest that a "Hello Hurricane" tour recording is plausible.

"The Beautiful Letdown" was captured through "Live in San Diego," and the "Switchfoot: Live - EP."

"Nothing Is Sound" had nothing, though that could be owed to the tumultuous time period they were in with Columbia/SonyBMG.

"Oh! Gravity." got the "Live at the Ventura Theatre" recording, while the Appetite for Construction Tour got the "Best of Bootlegs Vol. 1."

Switchfoot is by all accounts on excellent terms with their new label, Atlantic, so there could very well be a Live Hurricane album in our future. Maybe even a DVD perhaps? Who knows?

Jon Foreman: "This is What Luck Smells Like" (New Huffington Post Column)

My mind wanders... I watched Braveheart the other day to gear up for a show in Scotland: good ol' William Wallace. Now there's a man's man: a fighter and a lover -- at least the Hollywood version. And yet, I'm pretty sure personal hygiene was not high up on his priority list. In fact, William Wallace probably smelled roughly like this. I close my eyes and take a deep breath... Ah, the enchanting scent of revolution, the bewitching aroma of freedom. We go to museums and pay big money to see the sights, why not smell the smells? I imagine that a lot of my heroes probably smelled like this. Maybe I'm on the wrong side of the coin here? Maybe my frequent bathing habits, (okay, relatively frequent bathing habits) have been keeping me from greatness!? I'm not sure my wife would agree with my backwards thinking on this one.

Based on numerous reports, Denver Big Air, a snowboarding event has announced their musical acts for the event. Switchfoot and OneRepublic are slated to make appearances during the tournament, with the former playing on Tuesday, Jan. 25 after the opening round of the “Battle of the Brands” ski competition.

Our brilliant friends over at LOBH have reported that the new Switchfoot music video will indeed feature the song "We Are One Tonight." An odd choice, but according to guitarist Drew Shirley, it makes sense. This an excerpt from LOBH, with one of their readers writing in to give this piece of insight:

Get even more excited. I guess it is okay for me to say this now! Drew told me and my brother before the Orlando show back December 2nd. That they were making a video for ESPN with them and some football clips. It is “We Are One Tonight” – Drew’s words “Good footboll song ya know? haha”. But here’s the cool part, he said Jerome did some special trumpets (like marching band trumpets) to go with the song. Drew said, “Keeping with the football theme”. So it looks like we might just have a new version of We Are One Tonight to look forward too. Can’t wait!

Hurley's video team filmed an exclusive video for ESPN with Switchfoot that will debut during the Tostitos National Championship college football game. The video will be cut with college football highlights from the year and will air during the halftime show. Tune in for the game and world premiere of the video on ESPN on Jan 10th.

And the ESPN love relationship with Switchfoot continues. Tweets are coming in like a hurricane (get it?) and this time, it's "The Sound (John M. Perkins' Blues) seeing national airplay on ESPN's broadcast of the Orange Bowl. We're hearing it was a video of the band performing the song; can anyone confirm this?

This just a few days after "Bullet Soul" was featured during the Fiesta Bowl.

Switchfoot must be making a KILLING off of all these ESPN spots. Congratulations once again to all the guys!

The venerable civil rights activist who is the subject of Switchfoot's song called "The Sound (John M. Perkins Blues)" has a new memoir coming out called "Love Is the Final Fight." Dr. Perkins has been busy on the Twitter feed today (as is everyone, it seems) and has tweeted a few excerpts from the foreword of the book, which is written by none other than Jon Foreman.
