Weekend Switchfoot news Loose Ends

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!

-----

Hello friends. As we are nearing the weekend, I'd like to thank you all for sticking with this blog through all these times. I know the updates have been a bit slow, and I apologize for that - it's just the first week of school, so there are books to be bought, classes to be found, old friends to catch up with, a cafeteria food to be consumed. But don't think I'm gone; once things are more settled, we'll be back to normal for the most part.

Anyways, today's update is a typing up of loose end Switchfoot news gathered over the last few days. Hope you find this news digest enjoyable!

Today, Switchfoot just posted a link to a new surf movie called High Water on their Facebook page. Sounds like they have either submitted new music to this movie or have donated music to other artists; not sure which it is. Either way, if you would like to hear this clip, head over to highwatermovie.com and click the Trailer button.

-----

First item today, we've got an interview with VenusZine, conducted with Jon Foreman and Chad Butler at Lollapalooza.

Here's the video:

KROQ gave another feature to Switchfoot, this time advertising the Greek Theatre show this weekend. Check it out here.

It’s safe to say that Switchfoot is one of the top KROQ bands at the moment. The heavy guitar-filled single “The Sound” has been getting tons of calls on the request lines, plus it’s won #1 Requested Song and #1 Video honors.

Want to hear the sound of “The Sound” live? You may be in luck. Switchfoot is coming to L.A.’s Greek Theatre this Sunday as the opening band for the Goo Goo Dolls. And, luckily, tickets are still available.

^Anyone else can't help but picture Russell Brand's cavorting movie "Get Him to the Greek" when you hear the words "greek" and "theatre?" Me neither.

Here's another video from Red Rocks.

On this particular tour with the Goo Goo Dolls, Switchfoot has been hitting up a ton of radio stations, of all formats and sizes, giving interviews and acoustic performances. Here are a bunch:

Chart Wednesday (Week of September 4, 2010): TOP 10!; "safe to say we all have a crush on red rocks."

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!

-----

It's official, folks. In what is a confirmation of Monday's report, "The Sound (John M. Perkins' Blues)" is one of the Top 10 Alternative/Modern Rock songs in the country! Coming in at No. 10 this week, "The Sound" jumps two spots to make itself the third top 10 alternative single for the band. Some Mediabase charts are reporting increased spins for the track over the last few days since, so we could be seeing an even higher position next week!

I'd like to take this moment right now to congratulate every single one of you who has requested the single tirelessly, voting on polls, and carrying out Footsoldiers missions tirelessly. It is because of you that this single is starting to take off, and the band is all very excited! GREAT WORK.

In "Your Love Is a Song" news, the track holds steady at No. 39 on Adult Pop Songs (Hot AC) and falls on Christian CHR from 13-16 and 20-21 on Christian Songs. We are waiting for word on when the focus shifts to "Your Love Is a Song," but we are definitely going to keep pushing the success of "The Sound" on Modern Rock radio for the time being.

Follow @SFfootsoldiers for missions, news, and other bits related to helping out Switchfoot!

(I'd like to dedicate today's Chart Wednesday section to our faithful friend, Ender! This one's for you, buddy!)

The band played the legendary Red Rocks last night. Here are a couple of videos from the show:

"Meant to Live"

Jon Foreman in the crowd

Judging by tweets from the band and all involved, Red Rocks is quite a place to play a rock show. Here is what the place looks like, courtesy of Wikipedia:

And here is what it looked like from the lens of the Switchfoot camp's respective iPhones:

@switchfoot: Not really sure what to say after tonight. Redrocks gave me one of my favorite nights of music ever. -tim http://yfrog.com/2ttloubj

@jonathanforeman: - Redrocks might be the best place to play a music. Proof: http://yfrog.com/n5vangj http://yfrog.com/nggd0j http://yfrog.com/hqasyhj

- More reasons to play a music or 2 at the beautiful red rocks: http://yfrog.com/j6wyjej http://yfrog.com/n39zdvj http://yfrog.com/mr3rqoj

@TimForeman: Redrocks blew my mind. http://yfrog.com/5cc9gej http://yfrog.com/0qz2flj http://yfrog.com/mtvxruxj http://yfrog.com/4jzmbgj

^That place looks ridiculous. I hope there is footage from that place on the next Switchfoot TV episode.

By the way, Andy Barron had the most quotable tweet for the evening:

i've seen many a @jonathanforeman aftershow, but tonight's might take the cake. safe to say we all have a crush on red rocks.

Oh also, Fun Fact: Red Rocks played host to U2's first ever live DVD

-----

NOTE: Right before this this aftershow performance, Jon Foreman said that the band has done a sound check demo of the new song, "Thrive."

It's been getting around that this cover has been making the runs at the past few aftershows, and here is video proof:

Jon Foreman covers Radiohead's "High and Dry"

^Jon nailed it, don't you think? Definitely one of my favorite Radiohead songs.

Also, he played "She Says" at the same aftershow, describing it as a song about a girl who's "going through some rough times, and refuses to quit."

Happy weekend, everyone!

Video and Chart Thursday: "The Sound" No. 12 on Alternative and "Your Love Is a Song" finally charts!

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!

-----

Hey friends, my apologies for the lack of update yesterday. I know, I've failed you once again. I'm so sorry. ~tears~ So here is the Chart Thursday, in lieu of Chart Wednesday.

"The Sound" continues it's steady climb, now sitting at No. 12 on Alternative Songs, one spot higher than the peak "Mess of Me" achieved! It's also at No. 19 on overall Rock Songs, a career-high for the band.

There has been a bit of a slow-down in plays the last week, so we're going to need to hit the phones and get on requesting the song again. For daily missions, be sure to follow the Footsoldiers on Twitter!

On other charts, "Your Love Is a Song" has finally re-entered the Adult Pop Songs chart, coming in at No. 39. This is the band's first song in this chart format since "We Are One Tonight" in 2006. Awesome.

Let's keep this all up, friends.

-----

The rest of today's update will consist of videos! So grab some popcorn, and settle in for some YouTube splendor. Hah, that was kind of lame. Anyways,

Here's a video from Chicago's Q101 recapping the Lollapalooza after-party Switchfoot played.

Jon Foreman can't be stopped! Last night, he played his first aftershow since being forcefully removed by the police in Tampa. This one went without incident, thankfully. And there are some highlights as well! First, we have "Dark Horses" live and acoustic. Those of you who have been hunting down the lyrics, this is probably your best chance!

"The Sound" on KROQ Most Requested list; Jon Foreman shares thoughts on police incident

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!

-----

New KROQ Music Feature. Stryker's No. 1 Video. No. 5 most played song last week.

In what has been an unprecedented push, "The Sound" has been getting tons of play and coverage on KROQ and it's website! This is one of, if not THE biggest alternative rock station in the country, so getting played on it is like a ticket to the big time!

The reaction has been positive from the station's listeners as well, as it is Stryker's No. 1 requested song of the week! Be sure to head over and give them a thank you/nice comment. The more positive feedback, the better!

Let's keep this up. There's a request link where you can fill in requests, and this also goes towards KROQ's Furious 5 at 9 countdown every weeknight, which tallies top requested songs of the day. Footsoldiers, it's our time to shine! So head over and request it now!

-----

Speaking of radio, "Your Love Is a Song" has gotten Switchfoot featured on Your 1063 (WCDA) as the Artist of the Week. LINK.

-----

It's been a weird couple days for Jon Foreman, who has seen the media pick up the story of his police removal from an aftershow the other day in Tampa.

Allaccess did a quick little Q&A with Jon. Here it is below:

In the YOUTUBE video the cop mentions telling you to leave earlier. Did you know he was there earlier? Or were you playing and unaware of his request? The video is a bit confusing on that note. What really happened?

FOREMAN: Many times on tour I play a few tunes acoustic after our show when time allows. These after-shows are all about the love of the music: all acoustic, no amps, no mics, no tickets, just a couple tunes and whoever wants to listen. I see it as a chance to connect with music in a different way. I was playing in the parking lot outside of the amphitheater we'd just played. There were tons of folks still leaving the venue and the police car didn't really catch my attention until the officer began to yell at us to leave. He references telling me "one more song" but he must have talked to someone else. I had never spoken with the officer before.

Read the rest of it HERE.

To hear Jon's direct thoughts, head over to his latest Huffington Post entry, where he puts a close to this whole controversy with his side of the story and other thoughts.

-----

Oh by the way, Switchfoot is still out on tour with the Goo Goo Dolls. You know it's been busy in footland when the tour takes a back seat in the news. Anyhow, here's a video of the band covering Tom Petty's "Won't Back Down" in Tampa (8-15-10).

Oh and in case you wanted a slightly better listen to "Dark Horses," here's another Jacksonville soundcheck video of the song

It's the chart week of August 21, 2010, and it's that time again to report on all the chart happenings related to Switchfoot!

This week, "The Sound" leaps to No. 13 on the Billboard Alternative songs chart, matching the band's effort with "Mess of Me," in just it's 14th week. At the same point, "Mess of Me" was only at No. 16! And there is still growth with the track, with potential for the song to really soar into the Top 10. Great job on the single so far, friends!

"Your Love Is a Song" has stalled a bit on the Christian charts, holding at 13 on Christian CHR but advancing to No. 21 on the National Christian Songs chart. But on mainstream Mediabase Hot AC, the track has moved to No. 41 from 46. It is steadily growing on Hot AC. Expect it to continue this steady progress.

-----

In what has been a HUGE boost for "The Sound" single, KROQ in Los Angeles has played the song quite a bit in the last few days. They also have a feature on their website about the new album and the song. Here's what they said:

When Switchfoot went in to the studio to record their last album, Hello Hurricane, they recorded enough music for FOUR full-length albums, which may be why it sounds somewhat similar to their new upcoming album Vice Verses.  But don’t be fooled though, their new album is going to rock like the last and their new song “The Sound” proves just that.

Lollapalooza staff posted photos from Switchfoot's set. Here are some of the good ones:

-----

The positive reviews keep pouring in for Switchfoot during their opening gig for the Goo Goo Dolls. The Weekender had this to say:

You really don’t know just how many songs the Goo Goo Dolls have since they began in 1986 — or how good many of them are — until you see the band live. Rzeznik is a great frontman who engages his audience, and his audience ate up every smile and gesture.

The same can be said for Switchfoot’s singer Jon Foreman, who leapt out into the crowd for the first two songs of the band’s 45-minute set, “Dare You to Move” and “Stars.” A blistering “Mess of Me” preceded a good acoustic cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down.”

“This is Your Life,” from 2009’s “The Beautiful Letdown” was anthemic, while “Free” was explosive as it ended with a big drum and flashing lights flourish. “The Sound (John M. Perkins’ Blues),” a song about a civil rights activist from last year’s “Hello Hurricane,” was powerful and aggressive. Switchfoot ended its set with its best song of the night, the hit “Meant to Live.”

Switchfoot at Lollapalooza; debut "Dark Horses" at Q101 Afterparty

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!

-----

This may come out of chronological order, but Switchfoot played Lollapalooza yesterday in Chicago. Later that night, the band played Q101's after party, and debuted a new song called "Dark Horses," performing it live for the first time ever for an audience. Here's the only video that has shown up, but it's a bit distorted. If anyone's got a video, let us know! wereawakening@yahoo.com

"Dark Horses"

To hear it in a little clearer quality, head back to our June 11th update, which has a video of Switchfoot sound-checking the song.

Our friend @switchkosterice says that the song is "The most energetically true rock tune we've heard from 'em since Meant to Live. Definitely rivals The Sound. Super catchy rhythm."

^I'd have to agree on this one. It's got a hard rock edge, something we haven't heard in any of the new potential "Vice Verses" material.

-----

Now, we rewind just a few hours before, when the band took the stage for their 1 p.m. performance at Lollapalooza. Chicago Now has some photos and a short recap.

Some other opinions on the performance:

This blogger expresses his poor research (John Foreman?) before proceeding to liken the band's music "hanging out in high school locker-rooms."

USA Today was more positive in their assessment, though they also don't do well with the background research (Switchfoot has a song called "Once In a Lifetime?")

Switchfoot core members Chad Butler and brothers Jon and Tim Foreman come from Southern California surfing backgrounds, but they didn't let the gloomy weather dampen their energy Sunday. The band's hour-long set of mainstream rock included blistering versions of Hello Hurricane, Once in a Lifetime and Meant to Live, as well as a left-field cover of the Beastie Boys' Sabotage. An onstage interpreter for the hearing impaired was a nice touch.

Always great to get national press about the band, and judging by the crowd reaction in the videos, it was a successful afternoon for Switchfoot. Be sure to send us word if a better video of "Dark Horses" emerges!

-----

The good press doesn't end there. The Times Leader in Wilkes-Barre says that Switchfoot "stole the show."

As enjoyable as the trio of John Rzeznik (lead vocals, guitar), Robby Takac (bass, vocals) and Mike Malanin (drums) can be – and I quite enjoyed its set at the Kirby Center in April – it would have been hard for them to top what we had just witnessed a half hour earlier as the evening’s second band – Switchfoot, a five-piece from San Diego that will not be opening shows for long judging by its spectacular 45-minute set in Scranton, more likely than not stole the show.

"The Sound" fell on Christian Rock from 2-3.

I've gotten my copy, and must say, it's definitely an interesting/unique take on the song we've come to know and love. But considering the difference, it's surprising that Max Vangeli and AN21 left Jon Foreman's voice un-edited. Really shows respect. I give it a thumbs up!

Switchfoot plays show on the ESPN campus; Chart Thursday (Week of August 7, 2010); Switchfoot nominated for several 2010 San Diego Music Awards

Today, Switchfoot played a surprise show (at least for the rest of us) on the ESPN campus today. Erik Elken, an employee at ESPN, http://twitter.com/Erik_Elken/status/19773711931tweet:

- just found out switchfoot will be playing a show outside on the ESPN quad tomorrow as a thank you for having them at the ESPYs..sounds good!

We hear that clips from the band's performance aired throughout this morning's broadcasts of Sportscenter on ESPN. Here is the band's tweet about the event:

- we will be on sportscenter during this next hour starting now! turn on your tvs! http://twitpic.com/29qxup

we will be on sportscenter during this next hour starting now... on Twitpic

Staff and fans seemed either excited or less-than-thrilled or simply confused with the San Diego rock band gracing their campus. I like reading these off. If you're interested, head over to Twitter search.

-----

Sorry for not getting around to Chart Wednesday yesterday. Fortunately, however, the news is good.

"The Sound" is now sitting at No. 16 on Alternative in it's 12th week, up from No. 19 last week. In their respective 12th weeks, "Mess of Me" was No. 17 and "Meant to Live" was No. 19. We are on one of the best paces ever for a Switchfoot single on the Alternative charts! On the overall Rock Songs chart, "The Sound" leaps from 33-28.

"Your Love Is a Song" is a bit more stagnant on the Christian music front, holding at No. 12 at Christian CHR and up 33-32 on Christian Songs. "The Sound" is back up to No. 2 on Christian Rock.

Even more new Jon Foreman/Switchfoot songs! "All God's Children" and "Come Home"

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!

-----

Jon Foreman played an aftershow last night in New Jersey. And, thanks to this Youtuber, we have video recordings of them.

"All of God's Children"

"Come Home"

And an older new song:

"She Says (The Black Eyed Blues)"

^New tunes at aftershows means that the creativity is starting to flow again. Hopefully these are signs of even better things to come. Personally, I think these songs are solid but are missing something... whether it's the full-band arrangement, or just a little of that intangible, familiar Switchfoot spark. Perhaps a few more listens will do the trick, or we can chock it up to the stripped down nature of the acoustic aftershow.

Either way, solid solid songs Jon.

EDIT: Giving these songs deeper listens are making me appreciate them more. "Come Home" definitely has potential to have that classic soaring Switchfoot feel. Well done!

-----

Now, for the rock. Switchfoot played a show earlier that night, and our friend Josh sent us the setlist:

Dare You to Move
Mess of Me

He also tells us the hilarious story of Chad Butler heroically saving the day after both his plane and his train got delayed:

Ya funny story. If u saw the guys tweet, chads flight was canceled, then delayed, then his train was delayed...and he wasnt there at showtime so i guess they were gonna open up acoustic then have the goo goo dolls.... sound guy play drums for a few songs. But then Chad showed up out of nowhere on the drums.

The Goo Goo Dolls tour is off and running! So far, we've got a brand new cover that the Switchfoot boys have pulled out of the bag. Here are some videos from Switchfoot's show on Sunday in Detroit.

First, a botched "Meant to Live" intro, which is pretty funny:

^As always though, the guys recovered beautifully.

And "Dare You to Move"

-----

Here's something interesting. This blogger recently posted that he went to a homeless shelter in Oceanside with Jon Foreman, and that a song called "Unbroken" came out of that. Click here to listen and to find lyrics and the story.

-----

This next news piece comes as something of a coincidence for me. It's an article about Karl Denson's record, which also has some pieces mentioning Jon Foreman's contribution to the project. I was JUST listening to this the other day on the way to work, so I was pleasantly surprised when this story emerged. Anyways, enough with the chit chat! Here's the mention:

And arena rock fans will be pleasantly surprised by the appearance of Jon Foreman, the singer, songwriter and guitarist for alternative rock band Switchfoot. Foreman wrote and sings on the provocative “The Drums of War.”

“Jon and I have been friends for a while. We messed around with writing songs together,” Denson said. “He had written ‘The Drums of War' and offered it to me.”

“Drums of War” is a perfect integration of soul and rock with both Foreman and Denson sharing vocals. Thematically it's akin to Bob Dylan's “With God on Our Side,” without the cynicism. Switchfoot is known for bringing their Christianity into the rock arena and that is how Denson interpreted the song.

“To me the song was spiritual. I didn't see it as political,” Denson said. “But as a Christian I was frustrated with the hubris of the (political) right. If you seriously love your brother you can't justify the war. If we spent the money for war on humanitarian efforts in those countries, what would happen?”

Together Denson and Foreman wrote the most infectious song on the CD, “Mighty Rebel.” Its theme is also spiritual but the music is roots reggae. It's about a war in which “love is a gun.”

“I had an idea for the melody, and I had notes from a sermon I had just heard,” Denson said. “Jon was reading some newly found quotes by Martin Luther King and some of his other writings. We put our heads together on that level, with those ideas.”

^insightful stuff.

Switchfoot covers "Surrender" by Cheap Trick!

So, earlier on yesterday, Switchfoot teased us with a tweet suggesting they were pulling out a new cover:

So fun last night! Bringing out a cover tune we've never played before... not even in rehearsals... guesses?

Turns out they played "Surrender" by Cheap Trick. Seems like Switchfoot are now pulling all of their covers from the Guitar Hero/Rock Band motif (See: "Sabotage"). Anyways, we've got video evidence and it's pretty awesome too:

^This is the best co-headlining-type match I've seen in awhile. These two bands have a similar type of sound, same hopeful lyrics, and have played together before. What do you think?

Air1 has added "Your Love Is a Song" to their playlist. Looks like it's going to be the main Christian single now. But expect it to get worked to the mainstream after "The Sound" wraps up.
