Today, Switchfoot played a surprise show (at least for the rest of us) on the ESPN campus today. Erik Elken, an employee at ESPN, http://twitter.com/Erik_Elken/status/19773711931tweet:
- just found out switchfoot will be playing a show outside on the ESPN quad tomorrow as a thank you for having them at the ESPYs..sounds good!
We hear that clips from the band's performance aired throughout this morning's broadcasts of Sportscenter on ESPN. Here is the band's tweet about the event:
- we will be on sportscenter during this next hour starting now! turn on your tvs! http://twitpic.com/29qxup
Staff and fans seemed either excited or less-than-thrilled or simply confused with the San Diego rock band gracing their campus. I like reading these off. If you're interested, head over to Twitter search.

Sorry for not getting around to Chart Wednesday yesterday. Fortunately, however, the news is good.
"The Sound" is now sitting at No. 16 on Alternative in it's 12th week, up from No. 19 last week. In their respective 12th weeks, "Mess of Me" was No. 17 and "Meant to Live" was No. 19. We are on one of the best paces ever for a Switchfoot single on the Alternative charts! On the overall Rock Songs chart, "The Sound" leaps from 33-28.
"Your Love Is a Song" is a bit more stagnant on the Christian music front, holding at No. 12 at Christian CHR and up 33-32 on Christian Songs. "The Sound" is back up to No. 2 on Christian Rock.

Even more new Jon Foreman/Switchfoot songs! "All God's Children" and "Come Home"
For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!
-----
Jon Foreman played an aftershow last night in New Jersey. And, thanks to this Youtuber, we have video recordings of them.
"All of God's Children"
"Come Home"
And an older new song:
"She Says (The Black Eyed Blues)"
^New tunes at aftershows means that the creativity is starting to flow again. Hopefully these are signs of even better things to come. Personally, I think these songs are solid but are missing something... whether it's the full-band arrangement, or just a little of that intangible, familiar Switchfoot spark. Perhaps a few more listens will do the trick, or we can chock it up to the stripped down nature of the acoustic aftershow.
Either way, solid solid songs Jon.
EDIT: Giving these songs deeper listens are making me appreciate them more. "Come Home" definitely has potential to have that classic soaring Switchfoot feel. Well done!
-----
Now, for the rock. Switchfoot played a show earlier that night, and our friend Josh sent us the setlist:
Dare You to Move
Mess of Me
Wont Back Down
This Is Your Life
Your Love Is A Song
The Sound
Meant to Live
He also tells us the hilarious story of Chad Butler heroically saving the day after both his plane and his train got delayed:
Ya funny story. If u saw the guys tweet, chads flight was canceled, then delayed, then his train was delayed...and he wasnt there at showtime so i guess they were gonna open up acoustic then have the goo goo dolls.... sound guy play drums for a few songs. But then Chad showed up out of nowhere on the drums.
^The excellent Chad saves the day. For Switchfoot's tweets about it, follow them on Twitter.
Now, here are some videos from the show:
"Won't Back Down"
"This Is Your Life"

Lots to catch up on: Paper Route drops out of the Fall Tour; LOBH Interviews Ruddy Gracia (Bidfire winner); "Always" remix news
For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!
-----
Hello friends. Sorry I've been a bit absent lately... let's just say Summer has finally arrived for me, and catching up with friends and family, editing photos from those outings, all while working occasional odd jobs has left little time to update this blog. But don't worry, I'm not going anywhere... hope you guys missed me, but I'm back!
After all that is said, most of today's update is supplied by our tireless friends over at LOBH, particularly Jeanna.
-----
First big item of the day is the report that Paper Route have backed out of the Fall 2010 leg of the "Hello Hurricane" tour. Here's what Gavin from the band told our friends at LOBH.
Gavin: "The paper route switchfoot thing wasssss for reals. We weren't able to do it because of recording. Buuuuuut I really think we'll tour with them again one day. We're really bummed we cant tour with those guys right now. but we HAVE to finish our album so we can tour nonstop again and see all of you!"
(Here I express my utter devastation at this news - anyone who knows me knows I am a HUGE Paper Route fan)
Gavin: "Jeanna, I KNOW I KNOW! We're more bummed than anyone! It's basically tour over the fall and push our record release back or get it done asap so we can tour all next year... tough decision for sure."
(I express further regrets, and share how Switchfoot has been playing Paper Route tunes through the speakers before their set.)
Gavin: "Jeanna, that's awesome, really wish we were playing with them"
^The LOBH staffers are HUGE supporters of Paper Route, so today is indeed a day of mourning for them. Either way, it's tough news for all parties involved, as Switchfoot will possibly be touring on a successful single ("The Sound") by the fall and would have provided great exposure Paper Route and fellow supporting band The Almost to new and large audiences.
No news on whether or not The Almost are still in or not.
-----
Next, LOBH interviewed the winner of the Bidfire auction. His name is Ruddy Gracia, and he seems to be a cool dude. Check out their interview here.
Excerpt:
Land of Broken Hearts (LOBH): Ruddy thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us. Let's start at the beginning... how long have you been a Switchfoot fan?
Ruddy Gracia: Awesome. Well I'm 18 now so when "The Legend of Chin" was released, I was like 5 yrs old... but my dad got that cd a year or two after and since then, I loved listening to Switchfoot! So I guess 10 yrs!
LOBH: Wow so you're a long time fan! How did you hear about the contest? Were you bidding all day like a lot of the fans, or did you just get lucky?
Ruddy: Well, I'm subscribed to the newsletter... and when I got the email something inside me thought that I could actually win! It's funny because I wasn't even the one bidding for me. I was on my senior class/birthday trip in NY, New Jersey, and Washington. I turned 18 three days after the bidding started so my awesome friends spent hours and hours bidding for me as my birthday present!
-----
As you guys know, we broke the news to Switchfoot fans that there was going to be an "Always" remix and also first posted the remix preview. Max Vangeli's management has recently reached out to LOBH. Here's what they got:
Here's a bit of the background story on the remix, that Max's management shared with me! Consider it a "bonus" interview.
LOBH: I wondering how this track was brought to Max's attention? Did a
label ask him to remix it? The band? How did he learn about it?
Over the course of 2 months or so Atlantic Records brought/sent Max five tracks or so in different genres for potential remixing. While they were all cool songs, Max didn't feel that any were the right remix projects for him. Finally, Switchfoot - Always came along and he absolutely loved the vocals in the song. From what our contact at Atlantic told me, Switchfoot was excited about having one of their tracks remixed by a house music producer. After Max was done a few months later, we sent in the track for the band and label's approval. Both loved it and here we are! People in our genre dig the remix. Max turns down about 95% of remix requests because he prefers to produce original tracks, but he just couldn't say no to "Always" because he was in love with the vocals.

Chart Wednesday (For Week of July 31, 2010); "The Sound" hits the Top 20!
For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!
-----
"The Sound" has entered the Top 20 of Billboard's Alternative charts, settling in this week at No. 19 in it's 11th week. For comparison purposes, "Mess of Me" was No. 18 at this same point, so we are just about on the same pace!
On Christian Rock, "The Sound" bows out of the No. 1 throne after a two-week run, falling to No. 5.
"Your Love Is a Song" is experiencing consistent growth on all formats, jumping three spots on Christian CHR 15-12 and on the National Christian Songs chart, the song jumps back up from 35-33.
On the Mainstream Hot AC format, "Your Love Is a Song" is featured as a "New and Active Song," while Mediabase reports it sitting at No. 48 this week.
Be sure to keep politely requesting "The Sound" and "Your Love Is a Song" on your local radio stations!

The Goo Goo Dolls tour is off and running! So far, we've got a brand new cover that the Switchfoot boys have pulled out of the bag. Here are some videos from Switchfoot's show on Sunday in Detroit.
First, a botched "Meant to Live" intro, which is pretty funny:
^As always though, the guys recovered beautifully.
And "Dare You to Move"
-----
Here's something interesting. This blogger recently posted that he went to a homeless shelter in Oceanside with Jon Foreman, and that a song called "Unbroken" came out of that. Click here to listen and to find lyrics and the story.
-----
This next news piece comes as something of a coincidence for me. It's an article about Karl Denson's record, which also has some pieces mentioning Jon Foreman's contribution to the project. I was JUST listening to this the other day on the way to work, so I was pleasantly surprised when this story emerged. Anyways, enough with the chit chat! Here's the mention:
And arena rock fans will be pleasantly surprised by the appearance of Jon Foreman, the singer, songwriter and guitarist for alternative rock band Switchfoot. Foreman wrote and sings on the provocative “The Drums of War.”
“Jon and I have been friends for a while. We messed around with writing songs together,” Denson said. “He had written ‘The Drums of War' and offered it to me.”
“Drums of War” is a perfect integration of soul and rock with both Foreman and Denson sharing vocals. Thematically it's akin to Bob Dylan's “With God on Our Side,” without the cynicism. Switchfoot is known for bringing their Christianity into the rock arena and that is how Denson interpreted the song.
“To me the song was spiritual. I didn't see it as political,” Denson said. “But as a Christian I was frustrated with the hubris of the (political) right. If you seriously love your brother you can't justify the war. If we spent the money for war on humanitarian efforts in those countries, what would happen?”
Together Denson and Foreman wrote the most infectious song on the CD, “Mighty Rebel.” Its theme is also spiritual but the music is roots reggae. It's about a war in which “love is a gun.”
“I had an idea for the melody, and I had notes from a sermon I had just heard,” Denson said. “Jon was reading some newly found quotes by Martin Luther King and some of his other writings. We put our heads together on that level, with those ideas.”
^insightful stuff.

Switchfoot covers "Surrender" by Cheap Trick!
So, earlier on yesterday, Switchfoot teased us with a tweet suggesting they were pulling out a new cover:
So fun last night! Bringing out a cover tune we've never played before... not even in rehearsals... guesses?
Turns out they played "Surrender" by Cheap Trick. Seems like Switchfoot are now pulling all of their covers from the Guitar Hero/Rock Band motif (See: "Sabotage"). Anyways, we've got video evidence and it's pretty awesome too:

It's time for Chart Wednesday, when we take a look at how Switchfoot singles are doing on the Billboard charts.
The entire format seemed to take a big jolt this week, with almost every song experiencing growth in spins. "The Sound" went up a whopping 68 plays from last week, but is still entrenched at No. 22 on Alternative Songs. The good news is that the song is No. 4 in adds this week, meaning it had the fourth highest amount of new stations. Expect a possible spike thanks to the ESPYS performance tonight.
"The Sound" also holds for a second week at the top of Christian Rock.
"Your Love Is a Song" increased from 16-15 on Christian CHR, and 36-35 on Christian Songs.
On the mainstream radio front, "Your Love Is a Song" more than doubled in spin total on Hot AC! We'll be charting very soon, methinks.
-----
With the solid Billboard news, we've also got a Switchfoot performance at the ESPYS slated for tonight. Check out some of the tweets from the Foot camp:
@switchfoot: Riding north on the 5 with mr. Drew Shirley at the wheel. On our way to play at the #ESPY's. Tune in at 6p pacific/9p eastern & check it! -t
@jonathanforeman: Playing the ESPYS up in LA manaña all you sports and/or music fans... should be fun!
- and yes it's mañana not manaña- OK fine, it's tomorrow! don't let that throw you off...
Should be a lot of fun! Don't forget, 9 PM EST, 6 PM PST on ESPN. Check your local listings. You won't want to miss this. And, if you're going to be recording it, please let us know in the comments! Muchas gracias, amigos!

First of all, for those of you who are regulars of the Official Switchfoot Message Boards, take a glance at the new look!
Gotta love the "Hurricane" look! If you haven't joined this illustrious community, be sure to head over and sign up to talk about everything Switchfoot!
-----
Also from these boards, our friend gravyty has this to say about the new song, "She Says (The Black-Eyed Blues)":
I was there at the aftershow when Jon played this and he said then that it would be on Vice Verses. Furthermore he had this binder labeled "Vice Verses" with a picture of a zebra on it (no clue why) and he was using it as a cheat sheet when he sang She Says.
So it's official. "She Says" will be on "Vice Verses." Interesting to note the direction we're seeing this album taking so far, with "Against the Voices," "She Says," and of course, "Vice Verses" being all mid-tempo, slower, contemplative types of songs. There is, of course, "Dark Horses" which has a more rock direction. We shall have to see.

"The Sound" on Fuse TV's Video of the Day; More Bro-Am news
For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!
-----
"The Sound" music video was featured as FUSE TV's Video of the day yesterday! This probably means that the tv station has added "The Sound" to it's rotation; last time this happened, it came a day after "Mess of Me" was added!
Check out the post here and make sure to leave a nice comment in appreciation!
This is great news. The "Mess of Me" video was added in February of this year, almost four months after the single was first released to radio. This time around, we've got the video hitting FUSE just a little over two months into the chart run! Hopefully this will generate much more momentum, as "Mess of Me" was already on its way out when the video hit TV - a case of bad timing last time.
Looks like FUSE TV's gotten rid of the fan voting though. We'll keep you posted if it ever comes back.

Check it out: "The Sound" is No. 2 on RateTheMusic.com's Alternative survey!

The Huffington Post had some nice things to say about the Bro-Am and Jon Foreman:
Switchfoot lead singer Jon Foreman has been a popular presence on HuffPost Impact in previous months. His blog posts on the songwriting process and how he aspires for his music to create positive change have surged on Switchfoot sites and message boards.
Causecast was lucky enough to catch up with Foreman at "Bro-Am," an aptly named music festival on a San Diego beach that raised money for StandUp For Kids (SU4K), a previously featured nonprofit that provides services to homeless youth. The event raised over $210,000 for SU4K's programs.

Hey friends. I thought we should start a radio poll thread in which we all share voting links for the two current Switchfoot radio singles: “The Sound” and “Your Love Is a Song.”
Currently, we have the following:
“The Sound”
+FM 1021 in Milwaukee
+Ratethemusic.com
1. Sign up for an account on Ratethemusic.com. Be sure to indicate that your favorite music style is “Alternative”
2. There will be a list of songs that you flip through and rate on three scales: how familiar you are with the song, how much you like it, and whether or not you’re tired of hearing it on the radio. Once you reach “The Sound,” be sure to say you are familiar with the song, love it, and are not tired of hearing it on the radio
+Sirius Alt Nation
“Your Love Is a Song”
+Alternative Addiction (bonus: fill-in vote for The Sound)
If we all fill these polls out every day, we can do some damage.
So if anyone finds any other polls (online or otherwise) for us to vote on or call in and request, let us know, and we’ll add it to the list. Let’s do this, Footsoldiers!
We'll have the results in for each of these different polls as soon as we get news!

Have a great Monday!
