FootColumn: What may have gone wrong with "The Beautiful Letdown"??

Hey friends! Today's FootColumn will focus on the recent news about the next two singles off of "Hello Hurricane." Some of you have been excited that "The Sound" will be the next single, while others are not so thrilled. So, here's a humble attempt at straightening things out and hopefully offering a new perspective on the radio strategy for "Hello Hurricane" moving forward.

First off, as many of you know, I was a huge proponent of "Needle and Haystack Life" becoming the next single. I still would've preferred it, but "The Sound" is also a great choice (and probably the beter choice at this point) for a couple of reasons. If we look at what happened to Switchfoot during "The Beautiful Letdown" days, we can see that the Switchfoot guys may have learned some valuable lessons from those days.

Exhibit A: "The Beautiful Letdown"

In hindsight, I think that Sony rushed Switchfoot off to Top 40 way too quickly. "Meant to Live" and "Dare You to Move" both got successful alternative/modern rock chart runs before crossing over into Top 40/Pop radio. While this in and of itself isn't bad at all, it may have done some damage along the way, because what began to happen was that the industry-wide perception of the band became "radio-friendly," "adult pop," "soft rock," and "pop rock."

In reality, Switchfoot really aren't a Top 40-sounding band. With the singles the band has put out to this point, things haven't really been done to really change that perception. I do think one more rockish/upbeat single from “The Beautiful Letdown” (like "Ammunition" or even "Adding to the Noise") before or after "Dare You to Move" would've been the best choice. Instead, Sony went with "This Is Your Life" to try to build on the soft-pop reputation of Switchfoot; but we all know they're a rock band at heart.

Exhibit B: "Nothing Is Sound"

This is probably why "Stars" tanked. It was a rock song that didn't quite appeal to Top 40 crowd that was used to the likes of "Meant" and "Dare.” However, modern rock radio didn't support “Stars” much either because of the overall perception in the music industry that Switchfoot is a "pop band." Granted, the copy protection fiasco with NIS didn't help either, but you get the picture.

Sony then, trying to save "Nothing Is Sound," put out the most poppy song on the album: "We Are One Tonight." In what is decidedly a rock-and-roll, melancholy album, they chose the happiest, brightest, lightest second single to represent the album. Can you begin to see the flaws in Sony's approach? People who rushed out to buy the album after hearing "Stars" or "We Are One Tonight" were probably highly disappointed by the "depressing" themes on the album. What would have represented "Nothing Is Sound" better as aw hole? Probably anything from the following list: "Lonely Nation," "Stars," "Politicians," "Easier Than Love," "The Blues," and/or "Happy Is a Yuppie Word." Sony could've really changed their approach after “Stars,” focusing instead on modern rock radio again and putting down Switchfoot back to their rock roots. But seeing as how Top 40 is far more lucrative than rock radio, Sony tried to make the money grab, and go for the pop charts with "One Tonight." Pure business; nothing wrong with that, but the move probably wasn't the wisest decision in the grand scheme of things.

So, after the relative failure of "Nothing Is Sound," Sony probably began to jump ship on this band, and that is why "Oh Gravity." got virtually nothing in support.

BUT

Flash forward to present day: new album, new record company. Atlantic and Switchfoot are playing this perfectly, in my opinion.

Exhibit C: "Hello Hurricane"

It would've been easy for Atlantic to see "Mess of Me"'s decent success at modern rock radio as an under performing of expectations (considering the type of promotion it was getting). The label could’ve panicked and released "Your Love Is a Song" or "Needle and Haystack Life" to grab the Top 40 crowd and sell hundreds of thousands of copies.

But, Atlantic is really showing their commitment to Switchfoot and really working on this album, and re-establishing Switchfoot as a rock band at Modern Rock radio before finally crossing over into Top 40. We want there to be loyalty from Modern Rock radio, in the same way Christian radio has and will play new Switchfoot singles like crazy 'til kingdom come. But to get the sort of support single-after-single that Green Day, Linkin Park, and Three Days Grace get from modern rock, we need to ship songs their way!

"The Sound" was always the band's choice for the second single, as Tim Foreman told me last week, so I'm fully stoked to back this next release. So, take heart, my friends, and let's get ready to promote Switchfoot like never before. Who knows; if "The Sound" and (later) "Your Love Is a Song" take off, we might still see "Needle" become a single yet!

As for site news, stay tuned because later today, we'll be posting a rather lengthy FootColumn for all you all. New Switchfoot singles galore; "Your Love Is a Song" to follow "The Sound" as the third single; Switchfoot covering the Beastie Boys?

For up to date (most of the time) news and original opinions before they hit the update, follow us on Twitter!

-----

I sometimes have to really fight the urge to say, "Go check out LOBH for today's update, because they've got it covered," but I always feel the need to post an update anyways. Along those lines, today's news comes almost entirely from our friends over at LOBH, so if you've already checked there today, you don't really have to read further. haha...

Anyways, check out what Jeanna heard from Tim Foreman:

- The Sound will be the second Switchfoot single (and will be released at the end of April). (WA Editorial note: April 26, to be exact)
- There will be a music video filmed for the single.
- It WILL be a "legit" music video - in fact, there have already been some early treatments drawn up for this video, though there is nothing concrete yet.
- But this video will NOT be filmed by Jennifer Love Hewitt. No? No.
- Jennifer Love Hewitt will direct the video for the *THIRD* Switchfoot single which will be... *drum roll* "Your Love Is A Song".
- That music video? That one will be, and I quote, a "legit, legit" music video.
- The guys have already met several times with JLH (turns out she's been a Switchfoot fan for a long time) and are working on treatments for the video.

Yeah, we've been sitting on this news all week, so apologies to those who got mildly annoyed at my vagueness. :P Anyways, thoughts? How awesome does this sound?

This summer is going to be awesome. We're planning some great promotion ideas and would love to get feedback from all of you, so please reply with a comment letting us know!

Also, check out the latest of Jon Foreman's Huffington Post essays:

I am in seat 23 E on a flight from San Diego to Dallas. It's a middle seat. I'm trying to remain composed and tranquil; I am failing. As far as I can tell the baby behind me feels about the same way I do. I thumb through the airline magazine (my regular watering hole for current events), until I start to wonder what viscous substance stuck the pages of the magazine together in the first place. I put the magazine back, stretch into the seat, and rub a sore neck.

Out of nowhere, I am struck by a thought. A thought that has boundless implications. A thought that feels more important than the seat belt/life-vest exhibition. So I write the idea on the back of my hand:

"Maybe truth is not something that I can possess. Maybe truth is something which possesses me."

I look at the words now scrawled on the back of my hand. I think it over and look away. The clouds are turning colors, blue, grey, green, purple. The sun is setting off somewhere behind me. It's my favorite time of day. I look back at my hand and read the idea again.

"Maybe truth is something which possesses me."

To be possessed by truth rather than the other way round is a thought that goes against much of what I have been taught. In fact, most of my education has been presented as a growing accumulation of truth. Throughout public school, I was graded on my comprehension of the facts. The higher grades were awarded to those who really owned the material.

The idea that truth has no owner turns the whole arrangement on its head. Maybe the straight-A students were the ones who surrendered to the system. Maybe they became servants and allowed the information to become their master, devoting countless hours of study to prove their devotion. Perhaps I was too devoted to other things in high school; I was possessed by the Pacific, going surfing whenever I could. I would never say that I owned the ocean, but I would certainly say that the ocean owned me. I surrendered to its call and resisted the truth that high school had to offer.

We now have more information than thousands of years of humanity could ever dream of. Without any effort at all, we could know the weather anywhere around the world, the population of Taiwan, or the first lady's middle name (I'm going to look it up as soon as I get off the flight). With this sort of data at our fingertips, we truly possess more facts than past civilizations would ever hope for. And yet, the meaning of it all is just as elusive as ever. I'm still sitting on a plane unsure as to whether the middle seat is occupying me or the other way round.

The idea spins around in my head -- so I look to folks that are smarter than me. I turn my thoughts to Sir Isaac Newton and the physical law most commonly associated with his name: gravity. The basic idea of gravitational pull is simple to understand -- a clumsy step on the stairs could prove Newton right. And yet this awkward fall does not prove that I am now the proud owner of gravity. No, quite the opposite. I might have a bruise or worse to call my own, but gravity certainly possesses me. I am under the dominion of the truth of gravity whether I fully understand the law or not.

I look out at the fading hills and imagine someone driving home from work. He's going bald quicker than he thinks. He just bought himself a car that screams one thing: MiddleAgeCrisisSportsCar. He begins the drive he takes home from work everyday. The traffic lights, the cars around him, the flat tire...these are all facts that he encounters on the way home; this is the data that he is responding to. He is under the influence of the facts around him. It's not determinism; free will is still involved. And yet, rarely will he choose to ignore a red light or slam into the car next to him. He does not possess the facts, the facts possess him and he drives accordingly.

Our market economy is fueled by ownership. The water we drink, the land that we live on, even our ideas are referred to as intellectual property as our world becomes homogenized into merchandise. These products are to be bought or sold -- anyone's private possession for the right price. But from time to time we ask the question: Who owns who? Is the MiddleAgeCrisisSportsCar the possession of a man who's losing his hair? Or is our balding friend possessed by his MiddleAgeCrisisSportsCar? Does he give the car her identity, or does the MiddleAgeCrisisSportsCar with her sleek lines and bright red paint lend the gentleman her personality for a brief moment of remembered youth?

Yes, our possessions possess us far more than we'd like to admit. And yet, even in our capitalist culture, we don't think of our friends or family this way. Outside of the greek life at college, most relationships have nothing to do with money changing hands. Yes, you may possess friends, but you would never call these friends your possession. When we fall in love we fall under the spell of another. You might say that your buddy is whipped, "He is possessed. She owns him." The truth of the one you love is most certainly something that possesses you and not the other way round.

I come up for air as the lady next to me, in 23 F is rubbing the perfume from the magazine onto her wrists. Smelling her wrists. Then repeating. She is trying to keep the fragrance with her, to possess the essence of the advertisement. I feel a sneeze coming on. Yes. Here it comes. For a brief moment there, I possessed a sneeze. No, actually I think the sneeze possessed me.

The stewardess hands me my orange juice. She sees the writing on the back of my hand and throws me a Sarah Palin comment. Dang it. Chris Martin disclaimers were hard enough. I explain that I've been writing things on my hands for a long time. There, good. At least we have an understanding. Now she has the truth. I look back at my hand, even writing this particular truth down on the back of my hand is a reason to think: Do I now have possession of this truth, owning its understanding or am I now temporarily tattooed with this truth, subservient to its reality?

My thoughts drift to religion. These are the truths that people live by and hold dear. In many ways, these are the truths that inspire our best and worst moments. The truths that motivate Mother Theresa and start religious wars. How can this be? How can fresh water and salt water come from the same hose? Perhaps it has to do with this concept of possession. If I view the truth as my possession to keep safe, I might feel the need to protect my faith. But if I am possessed by the truth, perhaps this protection is no longer needed. Maybe I am set free from the need to defend the truth, rather the truth defends me.

The idea of defending an all-powerful deity feels a bit silly when it's put out in the wind like that. And yet, that sentiment seems to epitomize much of what religion has come to mean. After centuries of witch-hunts, inquisitions and holy wars, many are still fighting hard to defend their faith in an omnipotent God who has no need of our protection. Maybe we are still protecting our beliefs as though we were the owners of this truth.

If our faith is to be more than just a lit match in the powder-keg of differing beliefs, what role does religion play in our modern world? What would it mean to be possessed by truth rather than simply the proud owner of a particular denomination? Maybe we could start with the common ground that we all can call truth. In all of the major religions of the world I find the call to protect the less fortunate.

From the Torah:
"Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow."
Isaiah 1:17

From the Koran:
"Spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, for the ransom of slaves, to be steadfast in prayer and to practice regular charity."
83. Section 10

From the New Testament:
"Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you."
James 1:27

From Buddha:
"A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity."

The "truth" of loving those around me, the "truth" of seeking justice for the oppressed, the "truth" of a life of service -- these are truths to be possessed by: to be a slave in the service of the kingdom of the heavens, to be the servant of all. If the truths in this life have no owner then we are set free: free from the need to defend the truth, free to be possessed by this truth and simply live it out. Truth becomes much too large for me to possess; truth is the beauty and authenticity which possesses me.

Maybe the meaning of life is not something that I can control, but rather a reality which possesses me. Maybe there is no life guiding "fact" that I can put in my back pocket, as though I were the sole owner of the universe. Perhaps The-Meaning-of-Life-Himself is asking me the questions. When I look at a sunset, when I hear the songs of the ocean gulls, when I feel the warmth of family and friends, I am reminded of a story that is bigger than I am. Yes, this is my story but not mine alone. Truth was never mine alone. Truth is that which possesses me.

Oh and for the record, it's Michelle LaVaughn Obama. But I think that I might have already known that...

^Jon Foreman = modern day prophet? I think so.

Check out a new story on Switchfoot, which delves deeper into the band's intentionality in making "Hello Hurricane" a truly live experience. Here's a quote that caught my attention:

“I feel like we’ve had so many people that we look up to and respect come to the shows and say ‘I wish the CD’s represented the energy you guys have live.’ That’s always been the goal is how do we put that energy into a CD.

Read the rest here!

And lastly, if any of you aspiring guitarists out there long to rock to the same guitar crunch that Drew Shirley employs on "Mess of Me" and "The Sound," you might wanna check this out:

From JHS Pedals:

From the outer limits of space comes a fuzz that has gone where no fuzz has gone before..... Well... Maybe not from the outer limits of space but you get the picture.

The Astro Mess is a Silicon Fuzz design that has a taste of both vintage and modern fuzz. The birth child of Switchfoot’s Drew Shirley’s request and Josh Scott’s knowledge of fuzz, the Astro is a very unique and useful fuzz in the land of a thousand fuzz’s.

It comes equipped with a volume and fuzz knob as well as a gate toggle. Listen to Switchfoot’s “Mess of Me” or “The Sound” and hear how rich but yet violent this fuzz can be.

^Now that's what I'm talking about!

It's one of the greatest times in a sports fan's year. March Madness is watched by thousands (if not millions) across the country as college's best basketball teams take their shot at tournament glory.

The sweet 16 is the point in the tournament when there are only 16 teams left on the bracket; pretty big deal.

Yesterday, Switchfoot opened the Sweet 16 telecast with "Bullet Soul." There could not have been a better song for that spot than Switchfoot's anthem that ferociously asks, "Are you ready to go??" Good on the San Diego boys.

Here's their tweet about it:

- Basketball fans, our song Bullet Soul is opening tonight's sweet 16 on CBS at 7est. Fun stuff.

^I hope someone got that on tape.

Well, we've got a review from our friend Jana about her experiences at the Tonight Show a couple days ago. Check it out:

First off, I am extremely grateful to FOTF for this opportunity to be able to go and to Job for letting me write this review. It all started when I decided to check Twitter the morning of March 17. I saw the tweet from friendsoffoot, the official FOTF twitter, that said, “L.A. FOTF! We have 4 spots to watch us on Leno tonight. must be at least 16. Email friendsofthefoot@gmail.com & 1st 2 emails will win.” Excitedly, I emailed them and then decided to go for a run as I thought that I would not win. I came back after my run and decided to check my email. That was then I saw the email stating that I had won the second pair of tickets. I ran and told my mom and soon after we were on our way to Burbank.

Upon our arrival at NBC studios (where the Tonight Show is taped), we went to pick up our tickets and then we all had to wait for them to let us into the studio. In the meantime, we hung out in the studio store. Eventually, they let us go into the back room and wait with everyone else that was attending the taping. As we were waiting in the back room and talking to the pages (think Kenneth Parcell in 30 Rock) we saw Drew come in and talk to two people that we later found were his parents. Just then the pages led us on a walk over to studio 11, where the tonight show is taped. Upon our arrival, one of the pages directed us away from the larger group and after checking our tickets, let us go backstage and into a greenroom and waited to be escorted to our seats. The greenroom was insane! Catered sushi, a giant HDTV, the whole nine yards. We were in there about 5 minutes when the page then came and got my mom and I and escorted us to our seats on the upper level right in front of the stage that Switchfoot would play on.

once we were seated it was about 20 minutes and the show started. The Rock was funny and all, but the kid inventors stole the show. However, I couldn’t wait for Switchfoot to come on. Finally it came. The garage like door opened and band started to play, belting out “Mess of Me”. I wanted to stand up and start rocking out, but due to the fact that everyone else was sitting, I stayed put. The band was awesome- and Leno’s people did a great job of capturing the live energy that the band puts out. However, the song ended, we clapped and cheered, and the production crew had us all stay put while Leno and his guests( including the band) did some promo commercials. After that, the band started to pack up, but I waved to Drew and he waved back. We were then escorted out of studio 11 and walked back to where our car was parked, ending our Hollywood Switchfoot experience. All in all, it was a fabulous day that a)fed my Switchfoot addiction for the moment, b) proved once again how awesome Switchfoot is in person, and c showed how under-rated they really are, even if Leno was rocking out while they were playing.

^Jana, you're awesome. Thanks for this!

Sorry about the tease yesterday guys. I thought it'd be fun to stir up some angst and anticipation amongst you fine folks. If you think I'm horrible, let me know! :P I apologize sincerely… and I'm sure today's title doesn't help either!

NOTE: THIS IS NOT the next official single here in the United States.

But thanks to our friend David, we've found that "Your Love Is a Song" is a single Down Under. iTunes Australia has it available for individual download, as well as new cover art!

If you're from Australia and haven't picked up the song yet, what are you waiting for? Click here to grab it! It's also featured on the front page of iTunes Australia:

Also, there's even a Wikipedia article for it already.

^Article written by yours truly. :)

-----

As for the official second single, that should be announced pretty soon. Stay tuned, friends. It's worth the wait!

-----

NRT Today has a small article that puts Switchfoot's "Bullet Soul" in the same category as songs that categorize our generation. It's not a well-written article, but it's cool nonetheless:

However, after a long process of elimination through the 1,000-plus songs on my iPod, I think I've found three pretty good candidates.

First off is ‘Bullet Soul' by Switchfoot because it applies to our dreamer's spirit. ‘You're a kid with a bullet soul,' the song says. ‘“Are you ready to go?'

Here's a preview of the upcoming Switchfoot show on March 28, 2010. Since it's a relatively slow news day, here's the entire thing:

SPRINGFIELD — Back in 2001, you could’ve seen a newish band called Switchfoot at Maiden Lane Church of God.

Maybe you saw their potential — maybe, had you told them after the show that, “You guys are going to have a double-platinum album a few years from now,” they would’ve looked at you as if you’d just said, “I’m going to make it rain frogs tomorrow at 4:30.”

No maybe about it.

But here’s the funny thing — years after they did, in fact, go double-platinum with “The Beautiful Letdown,” you get the feeling lead singer Jon Foreman still has that look on his face.

You know.

The one that says, “Frogs? Really? Wow, man, you’re crazy.”

“We just put out our seventh record. That’s phenomenal,” Foreman marveled this week. “I never thought we’d put out one record.”

So when the band returns to the area, playing Cedarville University on March 28, they do so as rock stars to most of us, but just friends in a local San Diego band to themselves.

The success they had with that 2003 album — and, specifically, the Top 20 hit “Meant to Live” — caught them so far off guard, it would’ve been a come-to-Jesus-moment for sure if they weren’t already, you know, a Christian band.

“You spend most of your life in a band trying to start fires,” Foreman explained.

You play little shows, he said. You try to tell as many people as you can about what you’re doing.

But if it’s like trying to start a fire, it’s like trying to do it by rubbing a couple of sticks together — most times it never ignites.

Only the lucky ones get access to a can of lighter fluid.

“With ‘The Beautiful Letdown,’ it felt like the fire got out of control,” Foreman said, “and burned the house down.”

If you need an idea of how things have changed for these guys since that Maiden Lane gig nine years ago, consider this — on the same day of this phone interview, Switchfoot was set to play “Mess of Me,” their turbo-charged latest single, on “The Tonight Show.”

Obviously, some things will never be the same.

“I used to hand-write letters to everyone who wrote to us,” Foreman said. “Those are the types of things you can’t do. It begins to take over your day.”

But some things don’t need to change.

“If success is defined by external record sales, you’re allowing other people to have power,” he said. “We’ve always defined success by playing songs we believe in. I’d rather write songs I believe in than play the numbers game.

“Music has to come from a deep place for me to even be interested. My friends, my family and the community I come from are a huge part of who I am and where these songs come from.”

The emphasis is on family, and not just because Foreman and bassist Tim Foreman are brothers.

A few years ago, the band had just flown to Australia from the U.K. on tour when they got a message that David Letterman wanted them to play his show.

“We turned him down the first time,” Foreman said. “We hadn’t been home in such a long time. That’s a silly place to be, to be so spent you do something like that.”

But for them, it was the one big realization that, hey, this is really happening.

“It’s a matter of saying we need to build some kind of relief into our schedule,” Foreman said, “because it’s not going to happen naturally.”

As you all may know, Paper Tongues has been opening for Switchfoot through the past few legs of the "Hello Hurricane" tour. Justpressplay.net just did a story with them, and in it, the Paper Tongue boys talk about the impact this tour has had for the band:

Also, the band is beginning to be known for their phenomenally driven live performances. Currently supporting Switchfoot’s Hello Hurricane tour has exposed them to a very dedicated fan base that has accepted them with open arms. This can be rare especially for an unknown band riding only on an E.P. release.

“In general this tour with Switchfoot has been the most compatible tour that we’ve had…whatever we are trying to do has been taken very well by the Switchfoot fans. It’s been very memorable…to have the crowd go crazy for an opening band that they haven’t heard before. They’ve come to see Switchfoot and it takes them a couple of songs to figure it out. Then its like, wow. Encore. It’s been memorable and awesome having that,” Forbes says with confidence.

Read more here. I think it's awesome anytime Switchfoot has a big impact on a young up-and-coming band. It happened with Augustana and Mute Math; great times to be had for all.

A blogger reviewed "Hello Hurricane," and as is usually the case, it's glowing. Here's a portion:

The album's first single, "Mess Of Me," is a modern and alternative rock gem. It's rare that bands are able to make albums and release singles that stand up for many years, but as is proof with their previous hits, many music fans will be singing along to "Mess Of Me" for many years to come.

POLL results: "Needle and Haystack Life" is the winner!

-----

We asked you what the next Switchfoot single should be, and you chose "Needle and Haystack Life."

^Not a bad choice, it seems that a majority of the people would prefer this over "The Sound," and even "Your Love Is a Song," which was the consensus choice just a couple months ago (I thought so too).

I do think "The Sound" would do decently on Modern Rock radio, but at this point, we'd want something that could appeal to the masses. "Needle" is our best chance at that, I believe. Anyways, I don't want to go too into detail with this discussion, since I've already said my piece on the original poll post, which you can check out here.

Discuss; are you happy with the choice? Would you support "Needle and Haystack Life" with reckless abandon? Or would you choose a different one? I'd love to know your thoughts... this poll turned out great. We'll definitely have more in the future.

BREAKING: Switchfoot Performs on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" March 17th

Press release:

SWITCHFOOT PERFORMS ON
“THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO” MARCH 17th

BAND PLAYS ADDITIONAL U.S. SHOWS BEFORE HEADING ABROAD

6th ANNUAL SWITCHFOOT BRO-AM SET FOR JUNE 26th

SWITCHFOOT RECEIVES TWO DOVE AWARD NOMINATIONS

NEWS SOURCE: Hoganson Media
March 9, 2010

SWITCHFOOT will appear on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Wednesday, March 17th, performing “Mess of Me,” which is currently #12 at Modern Rock radio. The track is the lead single from the band’s seventh album, Hello Hurricane, which debuted in the Top 15 of The Billboard 200 last November. “Mess of Me” was recently nominated for a GMA Dove Award in the “Rock Recorded Song of the Year” category while “Always,” which was featured in “Grey’s Anatomy” recently, received a nod for “Rock/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year.”

The video for “Mess of Me” has just been added into rotation at MTV2 and fans can vote for it on Fuse’s “No. 1 Countdown” at: http://www.fuse.tv/ontv/shows/no-1-countdown/.

The band has been playing sold-out shows since the release of Hello Hurricane last fall. They’ve just added several more North American dates between now and April 21st, when SWITCHFOOT kicks off an international tour that will take them to Australia, Japan and the U.K. (See below for North American shows.) After the group returns, they’ll play Journey's Backyard BBQ in Sacramento, CA on May 8th. SWITCHFOOT is partnering with Macbeth and Journey's to offer a very special contest where one lucky winner will win a trip for two to see the band play the BBQ; complete details on the “Switchfoot Roadie for a Day” contest can be found at: http://z7f1.modlife.com/macbeth/contest.

The sixth annual Switchfoot Bro-Am will be held on Saturday, June 26th, at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, CA. The event will feature surfing contests, a live art mural created by local artists and a live concert. Line-up to be announced shortly. It will benefit San Diego area chapters of StandUp for Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of at-risk and homeless youth (www.standupforkids.org). Last year’s Bro-Am was the most successful to date, drawing over 7,000 attendees and raising close to $100,000 for StandUp for Kids.

“The Bro-Am really sums up our connection with San Diego, the surfing and music communities coming together to make a difference,” says Chad Butler, SWITCHFOOT’s drummer, who is featured on the cover of this month’s DRUM! magazine.

“The Switchfoot Bro-Am began six years ago as an implausible dream: a dream that three of our favorite things (surfing, music, and the local community) could collide for a day in a way that gives back to the town that has given us so much,” adds lead singer Jon Foreman, who performed Feb. 27 for Help Haiti Live, a benefit for Compassion International’s Haiti disaster relief fund, at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

Recorded with producer/bassist Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Rilo Kiley, Eminem, and Pink), Hello Hurricane is SWITCHFOOT’s first album on Atlantic Records. Numerous songs from the record have been tapped for use in major marketing campaigns (Verizon Wireless’ BlackBerry® Storm, overstock.com, the Samuel Goldwyn Film “To Save A Life”) and television programming (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “One Tree Hill,” Fox Sports’ “NHL Music Nights,” ESPN’s college football coverage and WWE’s “TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs” pay-per-view). Hello Hurricane was a critic’s pick in USA Today’s Fall Music feature and Alternative Press hailed the title track as “an uplifting, hope-giving affirmation of resurgence.” In recent months, SWITCHFOOT has performed on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

SWITCHFOOT is Jon Foreman (vocals/guitar), Tim Foreman (bass), Chad Butler (drums), Jerome Fontamillas (keys/guitar) and Drew Shirley (guitar).

POLL: What should the next single off of "Hello Hurricane" be?

UPDATE (March 15, 2010 1:05 PM PST):

The results are in, and you chose "Needle and Haystack Life" as the next single!

Go here for a recap post that I wrote up.

-----

Hey friends. We're going to try to do more polls, more often; hopefully you all like it. So, for this week's poll, which you can find on the sidebar, the question is: "What should the next single off of 'Hello Hurricane' be?"

Now, I'm going to give some of my thoughts, so if you want to be unbiased, make sure you cast your vote FIRST before you read further.

So, first off, I'd like to say that "Mess of Me" has had a great run so far. It's made a slow (and I mean SLOW) ascension to Billboard's Alternative elite. It finished at No. 13 on last week's survey and was one of the fastest growing songs last week. Some interesting things to note about "Mess of Me," as it concludes its 20th week on the charts:

- "Meant to Live" was No. 7 in it's 20th week on the chart.
- "Dare You to Move" was No. 17 in it's 20th week on the chart (and already on its way down)
- "Stars" only reached No. 16 on the chart.
- Anberlin's "Feel Good Drag," in it's 20th week, was also No. 13. As many of you know, it went on to reach the No. 1 slot on the chart!

So that all to say, "Mess of Me" has had a pretty decent run so far, and if it faded away from this point on, we can still call it a successful single at the end of the day. Hopefully, though, with our continued efforts in voting for the video on FUSE and rating the song on ratethemusic.com, as well as the strong airplay on MTV2, the single is far from finished.

But it's always fun to look ahead and speculate, so this is what the current poll is all about. Personally, I think "Needle and Haystack Life" would be the perfect follow up single, and will truly be the big hit this album needs. It's highly accessible with a catchy hook, tons of melody, and is coupled with more universal and identifiable lyrics than "Mess of Me." It has enough guitar crunch to be a strong hit on Alternative radio as well, but there is definitely more crossover potential into the Hot AC/Pop markets. While it would be a rather safe single, it's definitely the one a lot of reviewers and casual listeners have referred to as their favorites off the record.

Then after this, I'd say "Your Love Is a Song" would be the hammer that brings this record home. While it very could be the band's next "Dare You to Move," it'd be better to release this one after "Needle," because it would be a little odd to put out a ballad right after one of the band's fiercest rockers in "Mess of Me." I can see "Your Love Is a Song" smashing through Hot AC radio, with potential towards getting airplay on some pop stations as well.

Anyways, I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts, so comment below and let's discuss this!

Jack Central posted a quick interview they did with Jon Foreman:

LJ: Is there any particular direction you’re heading toward after Hello, Hurricane?

JF: I think the next CD is going to be quite a bit different. We’ve been talking around the idea about a double album. The name of the next CD is called Vice-Verses, and I think it’s a chance to show off even more diversity than Hello, Hurricane.

FUSE TV No. 1 Countdown

Continue to vote for "Mess of Me" on FUSE TV this week. We're working on finding out the results for this week. If you watched it at any point, let us know!

But, keep voting! Without further ado, VOTE FOR IT NOW!

CHARTS

Some good news coming out of Billboard this week. "Mess of Me" jumped back up three spots on Alternative, sitting at No. 13 on the survey. Chevelle and Crash Kings stay stubborn, hanging in there in front of Switchfoot, but the "Mess of Me" is just about ready to push through. We need to keep requesting it to get it into the Top 10; almost there Footsoldiers!

Also, we're going to need as many people as possible to head over to the Footsoldiers' new blog to help fill out ratethemusic.com surveys. It will help expose the band even more to radio listeners and directors. So take some time from voting on FUSE and fill out those surveys. For instructions, go here.
